Hey all,

I just picked up a Yanmar 135 about two miles from my house. The guy had listed some weights and parts on Craigslist. After a month or so he finally e-mailed me back and said he still had the weights/parts. I went by to find he still had the whole tractor. He told me he was parting it out for two main reasons. First, the brakes were out of it. And second, the splined shafts and couplers running to the front electric PTO were worn out. Needless to say we made a deal on the whole thing and I brought it home(too cheap to pass up)!

As far as the brakes, they had never been adjusted so they were fine with a little wrenching. I actually have more adjustment if needed too. But, he was right about the shafts/couplers running to the front electric PTO clutch, they are shot. He had already removed the front electric clutch, shafts/couplers, clutch brackets, and front weight brackets. I just hung the two weights on the front of it for the ride home. Anyway, here are a few pics along with some parts I need. If you know anyone that can help me out let me know. I was able to get a oil filter and fuel filter from Napa but we couldn't get a cross # for the air filter. I'll have to keep researching it. How much oil does this hold? Do most of you run 15w-40? I'm planning on buying some more aggressive tires for the rear soon. I think it will handle my 3pt garden equipment with ease!

Thanks!
-Ben

Nice tractor! Congratulations.
On the front PTO, first ask yourself if you really need one. Yanmar made a series of front electromagnetically actuated PTOs as a way of getting an independent PTO onto a machine that didn't come with that feature. Still, anything can be fixed or improved. Oddly, I've never worked on one of those. But it can't be too hard to fix.

Brakes are easy as you found out. The shoes can be relined and the drum turned smooth. Rust often forms on the inside of the drum and the pits eat up the friction material on the shoes. The cure is new shoes - or at least reline them. Then turn the drum down to a smooth surface, and lastly add a large...at least quarter inch....vent pipe to the brakes shoe cover. For US conditions, Yanmar made a mistake when they sealed up the brake compartment. It needs to be open and vented. If the return springs are rusty replace them too....

Depends on which air filter you have. Some of them were washable. Whichever one you have, it won't hurt to knock the dirt off it and vacuum it.

That motor doesn't have a water pump and is very sensitive to the right coolant. You want to use 50/50 water and antifreeze, keep the radiator clean by washing it gently, and please use an OEM radiator cap.

15/40 is fine. Use JD 303 for the tranny.

Any 12 volt battery that will physically fit is OK. Don't let it short against the radiator.

I like those tires. They were a fairly expensive upgrade and actually give more traction on grass or on dry pavement. They are more stable on sidehills. Ag tires only work better in mud....where they work much better of course. Consider using those turf tires and some very light weight automotive chains in the winter.
good luck!

With a belly mower, you'll need a front PTO..

Gary Jamieson (GJamtrac) is probably the only one that will have those shafts, if anyone even has them. He also is very good with rebuilding the front PTO's. I had him do one of mine this spring and I'll be sending him my other one in the fall.

I run Amsoil in the motor, trans and hydraulics. 15w40 HD diesel oil, Torque-Drive in the trans, and regular synthetic trans fluid for the hydraulics. Change the oil and filter 1x a year and let her rip!

Is the correct mix for coolant a 50/50 mix??? Thought it was a 70/30/

Great to have you here. Im pretty new to the forum but have owned and still own 2 135 yanmars. Presently have a 135d and looking for parts like you. If you decide to get new tires, i might be interested in you old ones.
Here is a photo of my 135d. I have the deck also that was hardly used. I might be getting rid of it also.

As to the air filter. Hoye tractor has what you need as well as other parts. Is your tractror four wheel drive? Is the red paint original?. The green tractors were for the u.s. market and red are not. However the 135 is a designation for the u.s. market as far as I know. I might be wrong and others here probably know more about it. Anyway. The 135d is my favorite little yanmar. Good luck and have fun.

Yanmar switched colors from Green to Red in the 80's from what I've been reading.
