Time to post some pictures of my lawn roller. I am starting to roll yards within the next couple days. My roller started out as a 500 gal. propane tank, used and put out of commision. A local welding shop built it for me. The valves were on the ends, and the ends were cut off to make the drum 66" wide. I fill it with water and total weight is 3500 lbs. The tounge is 4" tube and is around 4' long. Cross supports are angle iron. I have $700 invested and paid for itself in 2 years of use.

I know this is a point many disagree with but while that is indeed a good looking roller, why would anyone roll a lawn? It compacts the soil and compacted soil is what weeds love and grass hates. When I had my lawn and tree care company I told all my customers that I couldn't promise no weeds in the lawn if they had it rolled.

ToadHill, the reason why I would love to have a roller like this one is to smooth out all the bumps, etc. Since my property is all lawn (3+ acres) some areas are really rough as this used to be a corn field. I plan to eventually build a similar sized roller, take care of "smoothing" it out, then aerate in the fall.

I mow lawns all summer and have been doing so for 12 years now. I roll most all the yards I mow and roll a few others. The reason is to smooth the yards out after the freeze/thaw of the winter/spring. Does it compact the soil, yes it does. Of all the yards I mow, only 2 have weed killers applied through out the year. I have never noticed a difference in rolled/unrolled yards as far as quality of grass. As far as weeds, there is a difference only because of being sprayed.

Does anyone need a roller this heavy, probley not, When I was using the 4' roller I drove slow to do a good job, with this bigger roller I can travel 3 times as fast and do a better job. I cover 100-120 acres of yards in the spring, and only a month to do it.
