My hoe has the dropsies.

I noticed that if I leave the tractor parked unused for a few days with the backhoe up eventually it will sink down to the ground. Is that an indication that I have a hydraulic leak or is that normal? I haven't noticed the bucket doing that.

It's normal. After all the seals and valves get worn/broken in they'll leak down abit when theres no pressure applied to expand them.
When I park mine w/the BH mounted I lock the boom up with the lock pin.
Course the 1st place to look when you encounter the BH not operating is for this lock pin

And the best way to remember to install the lock pin is to forget it just once... and find the dipper knuckle embedded in a piece of drywall.

All the hydraulic pressure is contained by the spool in the valve. Just a fancy metal rod in a hole. The fluid will go around the rod and bleed down over time. The specs on the hole and the rod are pretty tight, but some are closer than others, so you see some holding up better than others.


Then as the hoe is used more, the seals in the cylinder will start to lead down a bit too. All normal. It's an indication that you should always leave the tractor with the FEL and hoe on the ground or pined up.


Especially true if you have kids or kids in the area. Tractors are "attractive nuisances" and YOU will be liable if a kid jumps on the tractor plays with the controls and smooshes a playmate when a bucket falls on them.

I agree with John Bud and always drop the FEL bucket, backhoe or whatever implement happens to be on. It is quick, easy, safer and you are relieving the pressure from the hydraulic system.

Never have understood why so many backhoes are left on construction sites raised up on the stabilizers. When we were kids we were always playing with the levers on equipment we could sneak on to.

I have a backhoe dropsie problem too. Mine, however, will drop around 3-4 inches in maybe 30 minutes. I am reaching back to pull up the hoe while just working with FEL. Overnight it is always dropping to the ground. I took delivery of my B3030 with BH75 back in May and the tractor has a gentle 25 hours on it. The hoe may have 10-15 hours.

I can see that over several days that the thing may drop a bit, but is this too much? If so I need to get it back to the dealer to be repaired. I fear that they may say it's normal and charge me for the work. What do you guys think.

By the way, really enjoy the forum. I have been lurking for awhile and used your knowledge to make my purchase in May. It was Green or Orange, and I haven't regreted my decision once.

Every one is a little different, but this doesn't sound abnormal to me. Was it always like this or has it gotten detectably worse in the 10-15 hours you've used it?

At 10-15 hours that is NOT normal. My 1963 vintage hoe drops at about 1/2 that rate and it had 8500 hours of abusive He*# before the hour meter broke and who knows how much after that.


You have an issue and the dealer sounds like they understand that and are going to fix it. My guess is that the boom cylinder piston nut is not tight or the packing seal is shot. Those are pretty easy to fix and cheap. The other area would be the control valve and that is pure money.

If there is any question on normal or not, raise the boom on a hoe at the dealers lot and then go in for a chat and cup of coffee for an hour. Some dealers don't move many hoe's and don't know from normal.

Hi Vic, welcome to the forum. Have you taken a look at all the hydraulic hose connection points to see if there is any fluid residue? It is not unusual to have a fitting or two that needs to be tightened up a bit as the machine is in its break in period. I had at least half a dozen fittings that were a little loose on my newest tractor. Might save a hauling trip to the dealer.

I will check the fittings when I get home later. I'm hoping this is the problem. The haul to the dealer is problematic due to the fact that I don't own a trailer and I'm not sure what they charge to haul it back to dealer. (When I bought it they explained that they didn't haul it in for warranty work free) I'm sure it isn't cheap.

I have the same setup B3030 BH75, Took it back to the dealer at 10hrs for the same problem. They could find nothing wrong, said keep pin in when not using, I posted here also about it and others with BH75 said pretty much the same thing. Although some might leak down a little slower. Anyway at 200 hours the only time i take the pin out is when i'm using the hoe, otherwise, yeah its down 4 or so inches in 10 mins.
It won't hurt to have the dealer look at it, but chnace they will not find anything, As i said i just keep pin in and I'm ok with it. For some reason thats the one that bleeds off the quickist and hear the same from other with the BH75, other cylinders do not bleed off anywhere near that quick.
