I'm sure you guys saved a bunch of money buildng your trailers yourself. The prices you quoted are just amazing. $2,500 for a waverunner trailer is absurd!!!
In my case, I bought a brand new 16 foot trailer with two brand new 7,000 pound axles, new tires, rims, PT wood, bull hitch, heavy duty re-inforced fenders and pipe railings for $900. It was even painted red to match my Century tractor!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I know that I couldn't make it for that price in just materials. Add time and labor, not to mention consumables and electricity, it's a bargain to buy new.
As for the grapple, I just wonder if it's the same thing. Lot's of people figure that they can buy the materials and build it themselves, but if they figure their time is worth minimum wage at the very least, it rarely adds up.
Manufacturers buy their steel wholesale and in bulk. Same with all their materials. Us, do-it-yourself types can't compete with the price of materials, and figureing out how to build something adds to the overall cost too.
Competition also keeps the price down. Talk to the manufactures and try to figure out how much profit they make. My trailer cost $900. I bet it cost him $800 to build it.
He knows that if I didn't buy one from him for $900, I'd go across town and buy from his compitition.
