So I went through my first tank of fuel last Thurs. I found out it's empty when the gauge still reads 3/4 tank. Friday, I filled the tank to the top with diesel, climbed on and started cutting the remaining 5 acres. I smelled diesel fuel and some smoking off the rear transaxle area. I stopped, got off and noticed fuel dripping from the plastic tank under the "driver's side" rear fender on to the top of the rear tire.

I'm wondering if there's a fuel sender mounted on top of the tank and it's leaking fuel and loose, causing not only the leak, but the gauge to read incorrectly???

It's all a moot point because the dealer is retrieving the tractor later this week and fixing it free of charge, but I wouldn't mind knowing if any of you would like to take a stab at what's going on?????

I can run the tractor with a 3/4 or lower tank and the leaking stops unless I'm on an angle and the fuel sloshes towards the "driver's side".

other than that, everything's fine

This is a very common problem that has been discussed on TBN numerous times. You may want to search to read all of the posts.

In short, the fuel sender needs a new gasket.

I'm not sure what vintage this machine is, but the dealer did say there was a fuel tank recall on early (pre 2004 anyway) BX's.

Makes sense for the leak...... Wonder if that would cause fuel gauge to be that far off, though???
It reads 3/4 when it's really empty.

The float gets stuck on the side of the tank. Make sure the dealer centers the float to make it read correctly. If not, take it back and have them get the float away from the sides.

If you make the dealer aware that you know of the float/tank problem it will make them be more careful on the reinstall.

There was a recall on tanks. That being said, you must not overfill the tank. There is an overflow valve at the top rear left corner of the tank, right at the tire. If you fill it to the brim, then drive it on an upward or a leftward (right wheel up, left wheel low) incline, fuel will be forced out the overflow valve.

As far as the indicator, I have that problem too.

Builder,

The leaking sender was on the list we gave you when you bought the tractor.

Fuel gauge shouldn't be THAT far off, although it has tough job with such a weird tank shape.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the help.
I will send her back to dealer for repairs.
I definately filled the tank to the brim, but it leaked quite a bit until at least 1/4 tank was consumed.
