I think that I located the module bolted into the under side of the dash. But can't seem to find an easy way to get at it. Do I have to pull the dash out, and how?

Looking at the 186 parts manual it shows to have a metal cover (#52 on Figure 60) right under the steering wheel that would come off and allow access. Just looks that way, maybe not in reality. :D

Getting that out is going to be a PIA. Space in there is absurdly tight.

I pulled the cowl when I replaced the steering box on my 186D. You might possibly get enough room to work in there if you unplug all the wires and move them out of the way. But I doubt it. Note in the picture below that the compression release rod (hole next to the shifter) will still be in the way, then the steering column and shifter don't leave much space for a screwdriver to dismount the flasher. Possibly a quarter-inch socket set would have the right extension to work in there, but reinstalling the flasher's screw or bolt will be difficult when you can't see what you are doing.

Space is so tight that I barely was able to unplug the wires. A child with small hands might be able to work in there better but wouldn't have the strength to pull those plugs.

More likely you will need to at least raise the cowl to make some space. Or get a 3-jaw gear puller to get the steering wheel off, then an afternoon of tinkering if you need to take the cowl clear off. This is not a trivial project. I hope yours is easier to work on than mine was.

I removed #52 on my 276D to replace the ignition switch. It's easy. I have no idea if it will allow access to the blinker, tho.

sounds like something that can stay broken till extra time frees up or a winter project is needed...or never!! I dont even think mine on my 2000 work, i think there just directional and dont flash both at the same time. A project of mine is to upgrade to Hoyes new panel when ever i feel like spending the cash and 30 mins to do it.

The removable panel allows access to the ignition switch. I pulled the switch on my second YM186D after I bought it, as part of tracing why it has horn but no headlights. Likewise that panel makes the headlight switch accessible. But the flasher module is attached to a tab that will be difficult to reach. If this Yanmar has the shifter down on the transmission instead of through the dash next to the flasher then it may be easier to reach.

Sure is a pain to get to. Have had this happen a couple of times though, and it ended up being not the blinker can, but grounds to the light, fender, tractor body. Before you go through all of that to change the blinker can, might want to check the grounds out first. Easy way is to use a just check from the light socket base to the body ground just to be sure. Both times for me it ended up not being the blinker can, was just a little rust formed. I wouldn't turn a single screw or bolt until this one is checked out.
