Went out to walk the property, hacking at poison ivy with my machete and this little guy takes off. I didn't see it laying there, but it was about 15' away and should have stayed put!. He ran out in the middle of a small clearing, (towards a neighbor that tends to let his remaining Pitts run loose) so I walked around him until he ran back to the trees. I say "ran", so new, he ran more like a 3 day drunk! He may have been 5lbs, (that grass is about 8-10") he's maybe 2 days old at best

Ya I know what you mean.I try not to do mine until August,to many young of year around until then.I have had a couple close calls with fawns just doing the four wheeler trails in June/July.My nephews work for a big local farm and they kill 15-20 a year cutting hay. They are good boys and stop if they see a doe jump up,check the area and move any fawns they find.

Dennis, That is a beautiful fawn....It has been about 4 or 5 yrs. now since I ran over one with the Shredder...I wondered why the Mama was standing so still about 30 yds., away...See was just watching me as I was bush hogging...I know deer come to noise many time out of curiosity...but when I heard and felt the thump I though I had run over a big Fire Ant Hill...but on my next pass I saw the dismembered fawn...It made me physically sick...I am still not over it...I never bush hog in the spring now and before I go I make a run with the tractor without engaging the bush hog...just to be sure...I also killed a bunch of quail once...not the whole covey but a bunch of the little babies...I too am glad you saw it before you shredded...

I have never run over a fawn but never brush hog this time of year for that very reason.

Some times work has to be done. I have hit one with a rotary hay cutter one time, just tears you up. Back then I had a red heeler, so I started taking her to the field. She did a heck of a job locating fawns, UNTIL one day she chased a rat under the front tire. Bad day, didn't kill her but messed her up for life.

I walk an area now if it is too tall to see, this fawn was under a live oak stand of trees where I was chopping briers and poison ivy.

Fantastic, what a treat! My favorite thing this time of year is watching to see what the velvet grows into and counting new ones... Gotta do census counts as part of my wildlife mgmt plan.

Nice photo!
I was shredding today - didn't hit a fawn, but connected with an antler.
Man, what a racket that made - thought I'd hit a piece of T-bar.

Thanks for the photo. It's a dilemma, brushhog now or wait until later and risk Yellow Jacket attacks! :confused3:

I hadn't thought of this consequence. Just picked up a bush hog this morning. I guess it sets for a few weeks. Thanks for enlightening me.

I will limit my walking for a week or two, definitely no "off road" ATV/tractor. We feed most of the year and enjoy when "mama" brings the kidds when she feels their safe to travel. Of course I "aint" allowed to hunt in the yard! Thats ok, I enjoy caring for them.
