So long story short I pulled a bone head move and I parked my MX10 on a block 3 years ago and it put uneven pressure on the stumped jumper over the winter and caused the seal to fail. I decided to replace all the bearings on the bottom spindle when I replaced the seal. Anyways the problem is now that it's back together, everytime I fill the gearbox up to the required level on the dipstick, the gearbox pukes oil out the breather. I have a theory that I over torqued the upper castle nut. Does anyone have the repair procedures with the torque specs included? Thank for the help! For what it's worth, I have been filling the gearbox with 85-140wt gear oil.

Is the MX 10 a rotary cutter?

Can you post a photo and also the parts diagram.

Usually when a castle nut and cotter pin is involved, the deign is to allow a slight amount of play for the bearings. An xamples would be trailer wheel bearings. Too tight and no end play and things overheat badly and bearing fail.

I would be looking for a gear oil designating as being "extreme pressure," although this is not going to be causing your current problem.

Yes its a twin spindle rotary cutter. spindle.PNG The vertical shaft is held in place with two castle nuts. The bottom castle nut holds the stump jumper and blades on and has an incredible amount of torque on it. I think my manual calls for around 700ftlbs or so. The top one I'm not so sure. I reassembled it back to what i thought was the correct order but i think i got something either to tight or not shimmed correctly.

That style of bearing is really not going to like extreme pre-load. There would be a few thousands of an inch of up and down movement of the spindle when assembled. Shims could create the clearance or torque on the top nut.

Is there a brand name on the gearbox like COMER. There are how to video's on youtube dealing with gearboxes. Even gaskets are bused as shims.
