MX 5 rotary cutter broken main shaft

Running my JD mx5 rotary cutter yesterday the bottom disc that holds the blades fell off, apparently the main shaft sheared. I am a mechanical clutz, has anyboby replaced the shaft ?

Thre is in Attachment forum a long listing of MX5 or 6 problems with the shaft breaking.
Mine the price was 375 or close to this then seals and gears amounted to 775 to rebuild the box. or 1200 to have J.D. do the rebuilding. Now if built after Nov.2010 there may be a warrenty.

Took to machine shop to see if could be rewelded the man said no.

Yeah, do a search. You will find several fellow members here in the same boat. Unfortunately, JD is not standing behind most of the breaks, even though it is an obvious problem.

True, but when you own one you think about it every time you hook it up to mow.

I get several call a week on the MX output shafts. It covers from the MX5 to the MX10. I can recommend several compatible gearboxes which can be fitted with a minimum of modification.

The gearbox will fit the 15 spline hub on the stump jumper w/a slight mod and that can save a lot of dollars.

The MX decks are great and it is a shame to scrape it when you can replace the gearbox for less than half what it costs for the Deere fix.
