MUSTANG SKID STEER INFO\\OPINION

I'm looking at a 1992 mustang SS model 330 gas, 500 hrs. Don't know anything about skid steers and would like some viewers opinions on this machine for use as a cheap residendial unit (less than $5000.) ie: dependability, price, resale, parts avail., etc. thanks in advance

I was hoping that a Mustang expert would answer your questions. It doesn't look like we have any experts so far. I can't answer you specific questions but I will try to pass on some info you can consider.

I have a 01 Cat 216 skid steer. I completely love it. If I was buying a used skid steer I would make sure it had the universal bobcat style quick coupler. I'm not sure but I think Bobcat had the patent on this until 94. Check the machine to see if the new universal quick attach implements will work. If they won't you can replace the coupler but it cost money making the deal less of a value and without the new quick attach the machine will be limited to what implements you can put on.

Make sure is has aux hydraulic fitting to run hydraulic implements like a post hole auger.

500 hours isn't very many hours even though these skid steer wear faster than a conventional tractor. My tractor is just about 500hr and it’s a 01'. Lots of contractors run their skid steers 3000 hours before considering trading them in. A diesel rig would be preferable for, if nothing else resale value. I believe most, if not all skid steers made today are diesel.

As far as parts and service go I have no idea. There isn't a mustang dealer around here.

I would compare this unit to a used Bobcat. They are everywhere and made the best skid steer at that time. I think Cat makes the best skid steers now /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Just my opinion.

thanks for the info, It doesn't have any of the features you mentioned inc. the deisel eng. it's a basic, small machine. I think I'll look for a 4x4 tractor w\fel

Re: MUSTANG SKID STEER INFO\\OPINION

I've seen them around some. Very light weight, gas powered, small. I've never seen one that would compare to a Melrose BC or Case, New Holland skid steer etc.. I would think a gas powered skid steer would not be powerful or durable enough for most uses. The gas models tend to be really small models.

Melrose Bob Cat had small gas models in the past too (may still), but I would not recommend one due to engine life. Never liked them. I guess it depends on what your using it for.

I can't remember the model but it had a 20+ hp Onan 2 cylinder engine and these had lots of trouble kicking out the rear cam bearing.
We replaced it a couple times and finally put a 24hp Kohler ($1750) in it.
I see diesel as the only way to go in construction equipment.
As others said don't get one that doesn't have the universal Q-T.
