I know our local solid waste dept will do an amnesty day every few months and let you bring in a few gallons of oil or coolant.. etc for free.. but anything else has to go thru a place that accepts it comercially.. etc. The other day I drove a couple cities and a couple counties away fro a gun show, and as I pulled over to check my map I noticed I was in a parking lot to a public works depts for that county I was in.. in the corner of the parking lot was a self service oil drop off vessle.. basically you could bring in as much oil to drop off as the container would hold.. no signup oor anything.. total self service. kinda neat idea.. If all counties did this.. it might keep some oil from going into the landfill.. or just dumped when no one is looking..

We have a couple places we can bring it, but nothing like that. It would be nice to have. I remember years ago my dad would pour it along fence lines to kill weeds. I have probably 20 gallons I bring once a year and have had no problems yet. I bring it to autozone or the local tire/lube shop.

Yep, many years ago, I, too, poured my used oil along the fence to kill the weeds and grass. But in the last 7 years, I've just taken mine to Walmart. Our city does have one Saturday a year that you can take all kinds of "hazardous" materials to the city's maintenance facility at no charge and there's usually a pretty long line of vehicles there, but they do move along pretty fast.

Our town maintanence dept. uses a waste oil heater to heat their shop. They are generally happy to take used motor oil. Alot of private auto rapair shops do the same (which is why they are always trying to sell you oil changes!). Not sure what they do with it all down in your areas where they don't need to heat buildings much...... but thankfully its not difficult to get rid of up here in the snow belt.

In my neck of the woods, our county dump and each recycling site has self service oil and antifreeze drop-off sumps. Very easy around here to unload your used oil. Best part is that the drop-off at the dump is on the outside of the gate, so you can still dump your used oil even if they are closed.

In New York if a store sells oil they have to accept the waste oil (at least that is how I understand the rules). I have taken oil back to Autozone, TSC and Jiffy Lube. Other places that sell oil take it back also but Auto Zone and TSC are easier for me. TSC I can pull right up to the bulk tank and dump out. Of course I now have my own bulk tank that I dump my oil into and there is a truck that comes around that will empty my tank when I need it.

Our county convenience centers (local dump) accepts just about everything for us. I can take motor oil, antifreeze, used oil filters, car and lawn batteries, tires etc etc. Its all self serve, they provide the receptacles we have to fill them. The service is paid for by the county.

As of 1 Oct 2009 used oil filters have to be collected for disposal in the state of North Carolina. Before 1 Oct all you did was hot drain them and then throw them in the trash.

Our county dump accepts used oil and anti-freeze as well. No limit to how much you bring, but the containers are rather huge so you would have to bring a truck full of it to fill up their used oil tanks.

I think it's the same in florida... if they sell it.. they have to take it..
