mud under hydraulic connector covers

I just bought a tractor and looked under the hydraulic connector covers and there is a bunch of mud caked up under there. Can I just clean it out with water or does this mean I need to flush the system?

Get some WD40 and flush them out, some guys use brake cleaner and that is OK if you follow up with some sort of lubricant/penetrant.

We have used starting fluid for years to clean connectors, works good to cut the dirt and oil, then evaporates quick.
