Hello all,
I built a water well drilling unit. Many companies make similar units and provide mud pumps with them.
My question is, what is a good choice for such a pump? Trash pump, semi trash pump, dredging pump, brand?
The slurry will be sandy, clay, small stones. I never saw any of the companies that make these small well rigs claim what type of pumps they use, just use the name " mud"?

Anyone have insight tonshare?
Thanks,
Gray

Mud pumps usually pump dirty water and not actual mud. Mud often refers to a bentonite water mixture or a petroleum based mixture. If you have small stones in it, your doing it wrong. The jets on the bit will be clogged more often than not. The mud is actually used to flush the cuttings away from the bit and out of the hole, as well as cooling the bit. I would definately suggest an air compressor and forget the mud pump idea. If you don't have a way to control the solids returning to the pump or a fresh water supply, your going to waste your time cleaning and fixing the pump/bit and not drilling. Compressors can be rented fairly cheaply and dont require as heavy of equipment as hauling water does.

just my $.02 (Used to drill water wells with an old Davey drilling rig when I was younger with my dad, long since out of that business though)

Ok, I just guessed at the small stones as some could get by a settling system?
If I were to pump a water slurry with bentonite in it to clear the well while drilling what pump type and make would do this best?
I know this is commonly done for drilling but have not yet done it myself.
Any input and knowledge sharing is good.
Thanks,
Gray

You don't recycle the return from well unless you have a shacker screen to seperate the solids from your return. You will trash any pump in 5 mins if you try reusing return. If you have a good fresh water supply you can get by without the bentinite. Keep flow going at all times while in hole or risk a stuck work string. Thats not fun!

I can't tell you what kind of pump to buy because I've never owned a Rotary. I have always used Cable Tool. You will find that most guys using Bentonite of other types of mud do use a Pump and a mud pit of some kind. Some guys haul around a metal tub with several baffles in it to separate out the big stuff. Others use a Backhoe, dig a hole and use it to let stuff settle. If you go on my Forum, you can get some ideas. There are several drillers that hang out there. Another good Forum for this is Water Well Drillers Forum - excoboard.com

So... what kind of rig capability did you build? There are rigs around that drill water wells with centrifical trash pumps. More serious rigs can have duplex plunger "slush pumps". I don't have brands that would mean anything to you, but if you're interested PM me an email address, and I'll send you some pictures of some rigs - some homebult - others commercially available.

Personally, I would only consider a trash style pump that could handle sand recycled in the fluid.

A lot of wells are drilled without shakers, using only pits. Most successful operations have a two compartment pit. The return flow is directed into the first compartment, then over a low weir, then the pump sucks from the cleaner second pit.

Hello,

Here is where I am at on this whole project:
IU have my prototype done. I predict it will drill over 200 ft given the right drill stem. I have a trash pump that will work on this unit for a few wells if I use a settling pan. I plan on using a feed troph and a divider in it for settlement. I will use bentonite in the mud. This will wear this type of pump out fast. I looked at a dredging pump from AMT and a semi trash from Flowtec. In the end, It looks like the flowtec with a pressurised grease seal is the best choice. In my research I found that Vermeer and Ditch Witch use them on there boring rigs.
I now have a 21 HP gas engine driving a 1.83 CI hydraulic pump. The engine is a bit undersized but because only one motor really pulls that much flow at any one time, it will work very well. Of course, I already have some refinements on it to make and this is a prototype. The next one that I plan will use all the same concepts but will have many refinements---27 HP. on board mud pump driven by a hydraulic motor, nicer control center, larger fluid container and a bit heavier pillow blocks. I will continue to use the 8 HP motors for drill head and chain hoist.
This unit is portable in that it can be mounted on many different trailers, even on the back of a full bed pick up truck. It weighs in at about 1200 pounds and folds down. It can use 5 to 7 ft drill stem but if it works well, I can produce this same type up to 20ft.
The swivel will be a big question? I made it from scratch with two sealed ball bearings, DOM tubing of different sizing, large washers, 1.5 inch black pipe and graphite PTFE packing with grease fittings. It held well against a 100 PSI air:)))
My drill head has 4-6000# drill head frame guides, 6000# thrust bearings for lift up and push down, No 80 drive chain and more. The lift capacity is over 4000# but I will rate it at the chain working strength of 2100.
So much more but you get the idea?
More input the better.

Well you guys are way over my head. The only other advice I might give is to try and get all your work done in the summer months. I drilled in the lower for many years summer and winter and winter is why I'm in Florida. The four seasons in Michigan. Spring, Fall, Summer and Winter Winter Winter.

I'll post here , knowing that I worked for this company for 5 years helping design some of the bigger mud pumping systems mostly the piston gearbox style for very large machines.

go to American Augers inc web site and look for their Mud Pumps, the (current) smaller Mud CLEANER is the MCM4000 and their smaller MUD PUMP is the MP600 (600GPM) then the have a MUD PUMP & CLEANER combination unit the MPR6000 more cleaning the the mcm4000 and on board C15 CAT Mud Pump 500GPM.

there were some directions when I was leaving that was for a 300gpm unit.

Post some pics up, I would like to see your rig.

Let me check and see if I can find out what the smaller outfits use for their mud pumps.
