I have started digging my pond and it fills up pretty quick on its own. I guess I am going to have to invest in a pump to be able to get the water out so it can be dug. I know a mud pump (diaphram pump) is best if objects or alot of dirt may get sucked in, but they dont have near the flow rate of a trash pump (Centrifugal). Will I be okay with a centrifugal pump? Any recommendations?

I think you would be okay with a trash pump with a screen on the intake as long as you were in water at least a foot deep. As it gets shallower, you would need a low-level intake attached to the intake hose, or you could dig a sump area a few feet deep for the water to drain to and pump from there. Good luck.

I agree with the screen idea, keeping the hard objects out is important. I also agree with a hole to the side where the suction could be down to keep water out of where you plan on digging/dozing dirt.

Our 1 acre pond is half filled in with silt, someone suggested getting a 6" trash pump and blast the silt into the woods on dry land. I personally like the long arm excavator method but the town would have a nervous breakdown with both ways but one looks a little less destructive.

Which pump to use for dewatering would depend on the water being pumped as you are aware. My preference would be a diaphram pump that will keep up with the water infiltrating a low sump area on a continuous basis while working the site and a second one to help in pumping it down and to swap out with.

Dewatering can become complex fast and can be a PITA if you don't have the proper setup. For a small job electric pumps would be the easiest way to go. Definately will need a sump to drain the water below the work area and it is common to have dewatering wells surrounding the worksite. Just depends on how much water you have to deal with.
