Finally GOT IT

Already took the hood, grille, and radiator off, as the grille and hood were crushed.

The actual grille is good, but the plastic parts are SHOT. The Air filter is good.

I put a booster on the battery, and low and behold, the dash lights came on when I turned the ignitor on, then I was even more shocked when the starter turned the engine over.

I pulled the heaters out and tested them. Both glowed red hot within 5 seconds...

The engine turns over quiet!

No corrosion in the radiator, and the hoses look good.

I couldnt get it turning over fast enough to try and start it...but HOW DOES IT TUIRN OFF once you start it?

The Diesel in the tank is NASTY. The pump works though, as it made bubbles when I loosened the nut and turned the engine over.

Ill drain the nasty stuff tomorrow, and run soime fresh through it. Gotta put a hot battery in it.

The deck is shot. It is the Haban belly mower, and the spindles are all wore out, lost of rust, but not rusted thin anywhere.

My starting/shutdown procedure;
That lever on the R/H side of the tractor is the hand throttle, you pull on it till it hits the wall then pull it just a hair farther then heat up glow plugs from 5 - 10 sec depending on outside temp then start motor and adjust hand throttle to desired rpm stting.
To shut motor it off just push on hand throttle all the way fwd then turn key off.

Drain and clean the tank and check the filter bowl, it may be cracked and need replacing due to age. When you get it ready to start there is a bleeder screw on the R/H side of the injection pump..it is real easy to see, only problem is opening the bleeder screw while trying to crank the motor (clutch has to be pushed in)

So what does the key switch do to kill the motor? Like an electric solenoid?

The key switch doesn't kill the motor. To kill it you have to stop the flow of fuel, as stated in the previous post. The solenoid shut off didn't appear in this entry level model. The 3 cylinder MT160 was the next model in the line and it had solenoid shut off. I have new and used replacement spindles for that mower. Bill - satohparts.com

oh...so no solenoid. Gotcha.

Just push it forward and it dies..any way to test that?

Hey Bill.

If I can get it to pop off and run, here is the list of parts I will need.

Plastic front grille parts, with light holders and lenses.
Dash, and metal surround. needs all 3 of the dummy lights, both gauges, and the Glow indicator. The switch seems to work, havent tried the headlights yet.

What is the procedure to bleed the system of old diesel?

as far as i know-

Take the bowl off the filter, drain fuel into a container, air the tank out.
remove the line, and blow it out.
Loosen the top bolt on the injector pump, take the pre-heaters out.

Add fresh fuel to the tank, add a new filter, crank the engine until clean fuel with no bubbles comes out the fitting, then while cranking tighten the knuckle.

Now, remove the return fittings to the tank and crank it until clean fuel with no bubbles comes out.

If Im missing anything here, please fill me in!

Well, it wont start.
I drained the tank, cleaned the filter, cleaned the lines, and got good fuel flow out of the top pump fitting

Then I dropped in a new, and charged Hot battery. It still turns over pretty slow, but Im used to starting small briggs and Kohlers...so its probably normal.

I put a little diesel down the intake throat, hit the heaters for 10 seconds and it turned over and caught...knocked around for a few seconds then died.

I cracked the fittings on the injectors and got some bubbles out of one, and barely a drip out of the other..

When it turns over I get white smoke, then it will try to catch and spit black smoke for a coup seconds and turn faster, then back to white smoke.

Any ideas?

You still have air in the system. Fuel valve on on the fuel bowl open? I guess you are opening the hand throttle enough? It won't fire till it is. This motor does turm over slowly so don't worry about that. It won't fire till you start getting some black smoke out the exhaust. Black smoke is just unburnt fuel.
Be sure to let the starter rest after cranking for a while...you don't need sratrer problems before ya get it to start.

Talk about an up and down day...

I did finally get it to start around 3:00 this afternoon, I actually drove it 50 feet to the front of my shop.

I shut it off to let it cool (no radiator hooked up) and let it sit a half hour, then it refired pretty easily.

To start- Pull the throttle ALL the way back, hit the ignitors for 10 seconds, then give it a crank. It tended to fire right up within 5 seconds or less.

Then suddenly it stopped starting.

I checked everything, and realized again, I was getting NO fuel to the injectors. So I pulled the top valves off the pump, cleaned them up, and put it back together, and it primed ITSELF!!!

Cranked up, and spit ALOT of smoke. The muffler tip is wet, and it billows smoke. Loads of compression, but it smokes.

Nothing at idle, but when you push it wide open, it pumps the smoke out. Im not sure where to go from here.

VERY low hours, and I dont think it is passing by the rings. Maybe it just needs to be run and cleaned out.?

Let us know what color the smoke is. That will help in the determination of the cause. My diesels (one little Mitsubishi M180H tractor and two Fuso trucks) always smoke (white) during warmup because the fuel isn't being completely burned and the exhaust system is cold. That combo causes a fog of water and fuel particles. As soon as it warms up that stops. Then at high throttle settings you will get a little black smoke normally, when working hard. That clears up with just a little reduction of load.

Fired right up this morning.

Got the hood and radiator mounted and drove it around for 30 minutes.

Found 1 small leak out the front seal of the water pump, otherwise, it works GREAT
