I've got a L235 4WD and a Woods RM59 finish mower. The only thing I know is PTO speed is set at 540 on the tractor. I was wondering what gear/range and engine speed to use for this mower.

Anyone? I don't have a engine rpm/gear chart to guage mph. I guess I can set the engine rpm at 2000 and coast in low range 4th. That might keep me in the ballpark of a slow go.

id say low range at 2000rpms an see how that works for you.you might even run up to 2400rpms as your mowing.

I have a different tractor and different mower but FWIW

My L3400 with JD261
PH mower I would mow @ 4.1 MPH. That was what High 1 was for me @ PTO speed.

If grass was really tall or if changing directions a lot (tight/small lot) I would use 4L becasue the shuttle to reverse was much quicker. That was 3.5MPH.

You really just have to try it out. There is no correct answer. There are too many variables, like blade sharpness, grass height, grass type, grass density, dry or wet, etc.

You can keep upping the ground speed until the cut quality suffers and then back it down a notch. Which may not me the same every time you mow it.

You need mower input to turn at 540 rpm. Don't know what that is? Buy, borrow, rent a photo tach. Where pto output is at 540 rpm, put a mark on your throttle plate. My tractor that is near wot (2650 rpm out of 2700 rpm). How fast to mow? Depends on conditions. The fastest I can reasonably mow is 4.5 mph, cruise control at full forward position. Just happens to be mid-range gear (2 out of 3), low hst (1 out of 2) on my tractor. Anything faster than that and it is too bumpy for my property. Don't know how fast you are going? Use your gps (tom-tom, garmin, etc). Experiment and have fun! As long as the cut quality is within your limits, you are doing it right. Philip.

Thanks, the photo tach...shouda thought of that being a diesel mechanic - duh! I'll see if my Iphone has a GPS function.

You might be able to search on-line and find an electronic copy of an owners manual. That would tell you where to set the throttle for PTO speed. It will probably be set pretty high though.

As far as range and gear, start in lower gears/range and see how it feels. Adjust from there. As others have mentioned, and you have probably found with other types of mowers, depends on height, moisture ect.
