Learned this morning my wife's niece's husband died one of the most gruesome deaths. They are estranged; she hadn't heard from him recently and tried calling. When she couldn't get in touch she drove to the farm to check on him. He had fallen off his tractor and under the rotary cutter. Coroner unable to determine if he had a medical problem (such as a heart attack) that caused him to fall due to damage from the blade. Location is Kingsville, MO. Cannot find any news and niece is understandably very shaken.

Very tragic, I wory about my dad alot, he is 75 and operates the old large farm machinery often by himself.

A friend had a diabedic seisure, fell off his tractor, and if I recall somehow missed running himself over with a large roller. Only busted a few ribs, which was a miracle.

Tractors can be very dangerous machines. One got my Uncle Anton. He flipped it over on himself at 93.

WOW gruesome indeed! :frown: Many tractors will turn off the engine if the PTO is running and the driver's seat becomes unoccupied.

I doubt any bigger Ag tractors have a seat switch. That would be the first thing to get disconnected if they did.

I’ve done some pretty stupid stuff on tractors when I was younger but I do think older people are more respectful of the danger and take things a bit slower and safer. Gone are the days when I thought I could jump off the other way if it starts to tip over or that I could just push over a rotted tree and it would fall where I thought it would go.

Still, I’m reminded of a story that happened 10 years back down the road from me. A man let his grandkid ride in the bucket while he cut grass with the rear rotary cutter. The kid fell out, went under, and it was over. I don’t think I could have lived with myself or faced a family member forever after such an incident.
