I bought this bush hog mower through an online auction, site unseen (only pictures). They said it was a 60" mower (thats 5 foot to me). When I went to pick it up it looked rather BIG to me, so I said is this a 5 foot mower? They said it was a 60 inch mower....ok got it loaded. Got it home and put a tape measure to it "outside to outside" across it measured 6' 2"????

So how do they measure mower dimensions......am I missing somthing here?

Im now wondering if my tractor will handle this size of a mower (Ford 1710, 27 HP).
They said it was a 540 pto and looks like it should hook-up ok.

Thanks, Henton

Well, it does indeed sound like you got a 6' mower.

They are measured by how wide of a path they will mow. (Blade tip to blade tip length)

And your ~23 PTO HP isnt going to be too fond of that 6' unless it is really light stuff or you go really slow. That is if the tractor can actually lift the mower. A lot of 6' mowers are built much heavier than a 5' mower.

Got any pics or a model # on it??? It it happens to be a heavy duty 6' mower, You can probabally sell it for enough $$ to buy 3 or 4 lighter duty 5' mowers.

Unless you are just going to cut grass the 72" is too big for a 1710 27 HP.

A 60" would be max for your tractor. I have a 1700 tractor and a 60" and it is very easy to bog it down in high weeds and light brush. You will also have to watch the temperature guage very close an it will overheat the motor on your tractor.

As LD1 mentioned, there is a difference in the outside width dimension and the cutting width. Your mower might actually have a cutting width of 60", or it might be somewhere in between 60" and 72", it depends on the cutting blades.

I can't see where it's too big. I would use it.
You could cut faster with more HP but as long as it's not real tall you will be able to cut at a reasonable speed.
Are you going to make money with it or just use for own property?
If you are going to use it for your business than that's a little different.

Depends on where the OP is located, In my area and experience, grass is what will bog down a hog.

4' ragweed, brush, and briars are nothing. But 12-18" of dense field grass will really bog things down in a hurry.

Yea your right...that's probably the difference here.

The only real way to tell, is hook it up and try it. Your mowing conditions may be ok or it may really overload it. I agree, tall grass will tax it while briars and weeds cut easily.

I think thats a lot of brush hog for your tractor.
