I would not loosen up the bolt either. I torque them down and still once a season or so one of them will get loose and the blade will spin freely. Typically after I went over some poison ivy, I believe in the evil spirit of things happening on purpose:D

That joke out of the way. I too stop the tractor while cutting with my 60" MMM, just clutch and start again, lift the deck and ease the clutch in to see if it works now or if I have to get under. I am sure the between the belt slipping and the robustness of the tractor nothing in the transmission will brake.

That's why I like this website. So much knowledge. I've never had a blade slip in 4 years of heavy use, but the more I look into it the more it seems the stalling isn't that big of a deal. It just worries me because, being a deisel in a small tractor, there is a whole lotta shakin' going on.

Love the quote about engineers. We have one involved with our farm. It's fantastic when something is broken and he "fixes" it, unfortunately, he's usually the one who broke it. Needless to say, I don't allow him anywhere near my Kubota.

If you marked your blade/shaft I think you would find that they do slip a little -- every time you hit a rock or a 2x4 ... maybe even a sweat shirt.;) The forces inherent in shock of impact are very high. That is why keying a blade to the shaft is a bad idea. It spins flywheels on mowers and bends crankshafts. The "S" shaped blades that Toro used were a way to limit the chance of having a dead stop on a keyed blade mower. They act a little like a stump jumper on many obstacles.
