I realized at 880 hours that my 62c mower deck has never had the gearbox fluid changed. The manual recommends it be done at 500 hours. So I removed the gearbox, and wrestled the plug out (wow- that was some really strong sealant), and expected cruddy sludgy goop after going the extended interval. But what came out looked pretty good-- still had a nice caramel color, and looked pretty clean. My question-- the manual says John Deere GL5 goes in there... is that 80-90, or 90-140? I happen to have a bottle of Valvoline GL5 80-90, and would like to use that up. It really only takes about 1/3 of a quart. This is on a 2210 Tractor.

They are just recomending that you use gear oil. The grade will be dictated by the normal ambient temp while in use, for the most part these gear cases where not too picky. You are probably just fine with the 80/90 you have. For wintertime use, maybe something a little thinner but who mowes in the winter. The same book you got is the same book a guy in alaska got and the same one a guy in texas got so grades can be a little vague.

As MORRISONSTEEL mentioned it is a matter of environment. John Deere GL5 is a 80-90W oil.
