Anyone move a large volume of dirt with a ck20? I need to move about 30 yards about 250 feet to build up two berms. Any ideas on how long it will take? I know it will be about 5 loads per yard. Thats alot of trips! Any thoughts would be great!

You could fill the backhoe with dirt also every trip. That would prob. save you at least 2-3 trips once done. :D

I just go in deep and curl up quick to get as much in the bucket as possible.
It's fun, so a few more trips is just more fun. ;)

Sooner you start moving the dirt the sooner you will be finished! One load at a time and 30 yards will quickly dissapear.:)

Yes, I agree, this is not a time to figure out how to reduce your seat time. Instead, think about how many beverages you will need to keep in your cooler. Or maybe how early to start so that you can accomplish the task in one day. 250 feet is not bad, I was pushing slash into the burn pile about that far and I only wish it was simply fill dirt. I would think this job should take you less than one day. I have loaded, moved, and carefully spread 40 yards of gravel in less than a day.

We would love to see the photos.

Just have some fun and practice getting a full load.

you bought the tractor to do work, so put it to good use.

If the pile has settled than it is going to take considerably longer than if it has just been delivered. If it is hard packed, take some time to breakup the pile using the bucket to pull from the top down using the weight of the machine to your advantage. I just moved eight yards of crushed stone about 60 feet and then spread it and smoothed it with the bucket. Total time around two and a half hours including beverage break. The most important thing is to have fun and be safe.

From one person who just moved about 20 yards of topsoil with a ck20 TLB...the most frustrating part about moving the pile is you need to scoop and load in Low gear to get into the pile...then want to switch to high gear to travel the 250 feet to the destination...you don't realize how slow low gear is until you need to move piles a distance...call it impatience but seems to take forever...forget trying to do any real work (lifting) in high gear...just loses engine power...low gear for work..high gear for travel...

Not to digress, but you use the term BERM - something we use to describe the impact area while shooting. Constructing / making a range :)? Back on subject, I agree with everyone else - chip away at it, have fun and you'll be pleasantly surprised how fast it goes. Great way to practice with the machine. You'll be an expert in no time at all.

I moved about 10 yeard of loam last year. One thing I realized was to make sure the path you are going to drive is very dry. With the extra weight on the front, you will start to make an indented path. As the path got deeper, more water came to the surface and made it muddy. I then had to stop and build up my trail with gravel. Just thought I would pass this on if in case you might be traveling across your lawn or an area you don't want damaged.
Rain will still settle where I drove and be the last spot to dry.

I have also seen berms used as very effective fences against roads. Nobody will drive through a stout berm and the sound absorbing qualities are great too. Plant something evergreen on top and you are in business.

Oh and the county ditch water won't be able to drain onto your property.

So is this a shooting berm, a dam, or a fence?

I have a 20 also and moved yards of dirt over 300 ft. It takes so long and is very teadious. You can"t move full speed with a full bucket. 30 Yards is about 2 regular dump trucks, no tri-axle truck. Correct me if I am wrong. Think about renting a dump trailer if you have a truck that can handle a loaded trailer like that. That pile will dissappear so much faster.

A 1 ton dump truck (ex:F-350) is about 2-3 yards. A single axle dump truck (ex: GMC 6000) is about 5-7 yards and tri-axle dump's are 8-10 yards. Tractor trailer dumps are 11-15 or so yards. Keep in mind this is yardage not tonage.

10-4 on the dump trailer! Makes life sooo much easier with a baby tractor. PLUS rather than being an otherwise boring job, playing "dump truck man" is FUN and learning to do efficient cycles and not beating up the trailer is a good exercise.

On the construction site I'm on the tri-axles are hauling 15-18 cyds and trailer-dumps 27-30 cyds. Gravel, dry weighs about 2,500 lb/cy but it will depend on the size of the aggregate like 3" minus. Just my 2 cents worth.

Agentiron,
You have the classic case of "I need a bigger tractor" syndrom already. It happens all the time with us all. :)

When I saw this post, I thought... I got to read this.
I have a pile of dirt about a half mile away. It isn't as big as the last one,
which was 65 truckloads (18-21 yard dumps). Probably closer to 5 or 7 is about right. This November they should start generating more dirt, which will probably get me another like the first one did.
I paid a dumptruck and loader operator to move the first one. Ended up costing me almost $20 per load. Being the cheapscape I am, I am trying to figure a way to move the next couple of piles cheaper than that.
A $5000 front end loader is being looked at for now, and maybe a dump kit for my old one ton truck.

Wish me luck,
David from jax

Most definately NOT ALL of "us" and certainly NOT all the time, if ever ... especially for those of us that could have easily paid cash for "bigger and better" but chose a machine, and other wholegoods, that matched our tasks :)
Cheers!

Wow, what a great bunch of replys. I feel bad not getting back to you all in so long. I only received one e-mail response indicating that someone did reply. I figured I could do it all in one day and priced it that way. I have yet to hear a response yet so hopefully I will find out in the next couple days if I get the job.

The Burms are landscaped islands that are elevated to provide a type of visual barrier for the home owner. I am making my own "burm" at home for my shootin range! My burm is much more practicle in my opinion, but it is on the back burners while I can make money doing work for other folks.

I am in a job right now where I will move about 14 ton of stone through narrow gates into a congested back yard. Much of it will have to be wheel barrowed once in the yard, but the tractor has been invaluable thus far. I have removed a couple ton of material and placed about 7 ton of stone so far.

I have thought about a big dump trailer to fill and go back and dump. I could then manipulate the pile, but wonder if the small tractor will be able to reposition the dirt as well once dumped as it would if placed more carefully load by load. I would also have to get a CDL to tote a trailer of any consequence so I will likely just use my little beast.

I expect turf damage whether dry or wet. We have been dry of late, and there will have to be damaged crowns with that much weight and that many trips.

I would love to have a bigger tractor on this job, but there are so many jobs I have completed so far that only my small tractor could be used. The job I am presently in, would have really been hard with anything bigger.

Thanks again for all the great responses fellas!

10,001 pound gvw trailer on the back of my truck with business name on it could get me stopped and in some big trouble without a cdl. The Dot guys have been all over my area of late stopping commercial trucks all the way down to pickup trucks hauling scafolding. Maybe if I towed the trailer with my mini van....Yeah, thats the ticket!
