i have an older Simplicity Landlord 3410 with the kohler motor, the motor was rebuilt by the dealership a few years ago so it runs great but after it has been running for a while when i shut it off it slowly starts to turn over again.
when i turn the key on/off it doesnt make a difference. after i disconnected the battery, i realized that it was the starter that is turning its not the motor running. so i proceeded to try to figure out whats causing this, i unhooked the solenoid from the starter and touched the negative terminal to battery and it started to turn over, this is with out the power to the starter. the starter is also a generator so im wondering if theres a short in the starter/generator or is there a problem in the black box mounted under the panel. is this black box a voltage regulator? why would i get a power bleed thru, this melted a bunch of wires so i replaced them to try and figure this out.

any help is appreciated
thanks
Dennis

I remember those. When I was a kid a friend of mine cut our yard with his garden tractor a couple times. He had a starter generator setup. Having never delved into the particulars I cant say for sure, but Im pretty sure your gen is ok. There is likely a malfunction of the ignition switch or "black box" such that it is erroneously making the connections to "motor" the gen when you stop the engine. ... Try stalling it. If that prevents the motoring its probably the ignition switch. We really need a circuit diagram tho because its hard to chase by conjecture. Someone is sure to come on who actually knows something. -- Oh ... forgot to ask if the engine is being turned forward or backward.

Good luck!

its turning the correct direction lol i unplugged the keyswitch too. it still does it with the key unplugged AND the solenoid unhooked so i am thinking that the black box (voltage regulator) must be shorted out internally. but not sure
thanks

Which wire did you unhook from the solenoid? If you took the wire off of the large lug and it still is trying to crank, then there must be some type of problem with the starter/generator. If you unhooked the wire off of the small lug and it is still trying to crank, then the solenoid might be stuck in the energized position.

thanks, it was the large wire from solenoid to the starter/gen. i talked to my local shop and was informed that the contacts within the voltage regulator are stuck allowing the current to flow thru the system. he says i can take the cover off and clean it but it will probably do it again or i could buy the new piece for $40 so i will buy it and install it then i will update this thread.

thanks and heres hoping.
