Looks like the Duck Boat had some limitations on waterborne operations. 35 mph winds max and 2 foot waves max. The weather was calling for 60 MPH winds, that turned out to be measured at about 70 MPH. I think the goose, uh make that a Duck is cooked.

Coast Guard Document: Tourist boat violated inspection terms

I don't quite understand the entire "Duck boat" scenario. Is the tour in a duck boat supposed to be something special or unique? I'd say its was certainly unique.

Well, yeah. You drive around the Ozark hills on some back roads once you get out of town, and some private roads behind remote control gates, and then drive into the lake where all the kids get a turn at driving the "boat" all the while the captain is telling you stories about what you are seeing and the history of the "ducks" and then you drive back into town and unload at their ticket office. It is all supposed to be fun and unique, with drowning not part of the package tour. Part of the allure is that while most people have been on buses and boats, not many have been on a big old bus that can just drive into a lake, and propeller around for a while like a boat then drive right out of the water and go back to town. Part of the fun for the children is the run down the boat ramp and the big splash as you hit the water.

The problem with that is the National Weather Service ALWAYS predicts 60 MPH winds when any kind of weather is in the forecast. That is just their standard prediction.

OK - I can see that. Couple year ago I rode my motorcycle over to Hells Canyon - on the Snake River between Idaho and Oregon. Was planning on taking a day ride up river on one of the jet boats. Then I read the release that I would have to sign - just to go on the ride. I decided to tour the area on my motorcycle. It was in the early spring and the Snake was running like a wild man. Later that same month a jet boat overturned and they lost a couple tourists. Riding a motorcycle presents sufficient thrills in my life - thank you.

Under the circumstances, I'm going to have to point out water fowl joke that was.

They do a similar thing in Boston with the Boston Duck Tours and it's very popular. In fact when the Patriots have won the superbowl they take their victory parade rides in these duck boats. They take you sightseeing around the city and then for a ride in the Charles River....Note I said River, not open water of a lake. They also striclty adhear to weather conditions and won't go in the water if winds of over 35mph are forecast.

From their website Boston Duck Tours – The Official Website and Ticketing
"You’ve never toured Boston in anything that comes close to Boston Duck Tours. The fun begins as soon as you board your “DUCK”, a W.W.II style amphibious landing vehicle. First, you’ll be greeted by one of our legendary tour ConDUCKtors®, who’ll be narrating your sightseeing tour of Boston. Then you’re off on a journey like you’ve never had before. You’ll cruise by all the places that make Boston the birthplace of freedom and a city of firsts, from the golden-domed State House to Beacon Hill and the TD Garden, Boston Common and Copley Square to the Big Dig, Government Center to fashionable Newbury Street, Quincy Market to the Prudential Tower, and more. And, as the best of Boston unfolds before your eyes, your ConDUCKtor® will be giving you lots of little known facts and interesting insights about our unique and wonderful city. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, there’s more. It’s time for “Splashdown” as your captain splashes your DUCK right into the Charles River for a breathtaking view of the Boston and Cambridge skylines, the kind of view you just won’t get anywhere else."

I never road the Ducks at the WI Dells because they had regular boat rides available. Why would a person choose to be on the water riding a boat-anchor-truck-toon?

People are attracted to stupid things. The more outlandish and stupid, the better. It never ceases to amaze me what people will spend their money on.

Things are rarely as clear cut as this matter.
