I have been looking for a 4WD tractor for mowing and some loader work. I have narrowed my choice down to the Kubota BX2200 (BX) or JD 2210, as any larger size is not manageable for my situation.

I finally got to see a 2210 today. I would like to add a few comments to those of others.

The 2210 hydro pedals are further away from the seat, and the steering wheel is closer, which suits me much better than the BX (I'm 5' 10"). I also found the seat itself to be more comfortable and supportive. I have not yet driven the tractor to determine if the "rubber spring" seat suspension is okay. I have read other comments regarding a retrofit with metal coil springs to address a potentially harsh ride.

The plastic floor has a rather hard surface which is lightly textured. I found it to be noticeably slippery. Maybe this will diminish with use. It really could use a rubber mat.

The 2210 seat belt has no retractor like the BX. Each end has a long strap. Each fender has a mating buckle fitting to hold each belt when not in use. It looks sloppy, and requires two hands to fasten the belt and adjust it.

The 2210 I saw had a 54" loader bucket (vs. the standard ~48") which looked decidedly bigger than the BX bucket, yet seemed to fit in proportion to the rest of the machine. I am told a ~60" bucket is also available. The cost adder for either optional bucket was only $30-$50. These choices could be an advantage when moving lighter materials or snow. The dealer told me the buckets are interchangeable with some other JD models so a bucket change is not a custom order.

I can see how some operator controls are less convenient on the 2210. However, I prefer the 2210’s loader joystick position, to the right of the seat instead of forward. The downside is that the loader joystick is permanently mounted on the tractor, even when not needed.

The 2210 ROPS had a couple of through holes on the top which would be good for mounting lights without drilling. I don’t recall if the BX had these holes.

I did have a concern regarding the 2210 mower deck. Others have noted that the X series deck is noticeably noisier than it predecessors. The dealer could not confirm if the 2210 used a variant of the X series deck, but noted that the specs indicate the 2210 deck weighs a lot more. They didn’t have the two decks in stock to compare. Anyone else know the answer to this?

Regarding price, in my neck of the woods (NH), the 2210 is $675 more than the BX, equipped the same (tractor, 60-62” MMM, loader with ~48” bucket). This is without any negotiating. The Deere financing has a few more options (1 year at 0%, or a $200 cash discount).

I’ve already driven the BX, and liked it except for the seating position. I plan on driving the 2210 in the next few days. I’d be interested in any one else’s further experience with this new model.

Well, I drove the 2210 this morning. I had the dealer leave it outside last night. I was concerned about the lack of a manual preheat setting on the ignition switch, and wanted to make sure it would start OK in cold weather.

When I arrived at 7:30 this morning the temperature was -1 deg. F. The tractor started up reasonably well considering the temperature, a good sign.

After letting it warming up, I drove around, trying the loader, and also 4WD on some ice. To me, the tractor rode fine, very comfortable driving position, easy to handle. The engine was smooth and quiet.

So I bought it. It will be delivered Friday or Saturday. My first compact tractor. This discussion forum has been a great learning experience for me, thanks to all who make it so.

Thought I'd share some additional info on the 2210 starting system. My dealer called me this morning and told me there is an "undocumented" way to operate the glow plugs prior to engaging the starter.

Normally, the transmission must be in neutral or the starter won't turn over. However, they told me that, with the transmission in gear, there is still voltage to the glow plugs when the ignition switch is turned to the start position.

Therefore, it is possible to operate the glow plugs independently using this method. They also pointed out that neither they nor John Deere would recommend starting the tractor this way. Still, it might come in handy on a really cold day.

When you get a chance, or when the temp gets into the twenties, snap a few pics.

My 2210 is still on schedule but my dealer told me he had a little scrap with the home office to keep the order coming because Deere cancelled all orders for dealer stock about a week ago. It seems Deere's production schedules and projections were geared for less than the early winter demand and dealers that had ordered a 2210 for stock/demo had their tickets pulled. As you might guess, several creative dealers claimed to have sold the demo models they had ordered and Deere required sales documentation to hold the order. Glad I signed when I did. It should be in the shop late next week and delivered after a little prep and grab hook welding on the bucket. The frigid temperatures have actually made the wait a little easier.

Are you sure it is a Deere or a green Yanmar?

Congrats on yer new toy. Hope it serves you well. I don't think you should consider the joy stick remaining with the tractor a negative. Many have modified their BX to accomplish just that. It stays with my 2410 and I am sure most all of the larger JD tractors. Also with the seat belt having no retractor, I see your point but one thing is it will not be the famous " 'bota constrictor" so that may be a good thing in the long run and it won't be hanging down if you put it on. Have fun. J
