When I made the decision to get a tractor I never thought I would need it for this job. For the past few months we have been enjoying the odd glimpse or two of a moose on our property:
Moosie!_edited.jpg

She was munching the bark on the smaller maples:

Late in the afternoon on Monday, we saw her down in a ravine near a stream, lying in the snow. I figured since she was on a South facing slope she was getting some shelter from the North wind that was still ripping from the Nor'Easter that had just blown through and also getting a nice bit of warmth from the last bit of sunshine:

Late in the afternoon on Wednesday I thought I'd go see if I could track her prints and determine which way she had gone - I discovered she has slid down into the steam and was flailing around, unable to stand. Called the CT State DEP who said they'd call back as soon as they could get someone to come help. The phone rang early yesterday morning and 3 nice guys came down from the field office in Franklin and quickly determined they needed a "dispatcher" to put her down. He arived and did the deed. Then I got the tractor, some rope and a snatch block and dragged moosie up out of the ravine:

Into the loader:

...and into the DEP truck for a post-mortem:

The guys were saying that the moose should never be this far South as it's way too hot for them most of the time. They often get a brain worm parasite from all the deer and that finishes them off.

Sad to see our moosie go, but glad I had a tractor that could help with her last detail.

Seems a shame to have to put down those moose. They seem to get that parasite here too....and head south to their demise. Our moose herd is dwindling away pretty fast in northern MN.

Good report....but I wish it could have a different outcome. I'm sure a moose could be pretty hard on your trees and land over time.

Baby Grand,

You need a shirt like this............Of course it would be better for you if it said "Connecticut" instead of New Hampshire......

That is a shame about the moose.

Those buckets are a good addition for us hunters. Since I'm getting too old to do the heavy lifting, I just tie it to the bucket hook and raise it up to let it hang until it's time to butcher it. Since I'm the only hunter in my family, I had to adapt something to get my deer hung until I can get it in for cutting up.

Too bad about the moose. I bet it was neat having them around. Will they let you know the autopsy results? Looks like the tractor handled it well.

Looked to be a fairly young cow - not very big, really. Brain parasite, huh? Sounds pretty nasty..

No deer up here! Snow gets too deep and it's too cold. And of course, the wolves would really like those shivering, "cheese burgers" on 4-legs! :D

End result of a collision my fiance had with a moose in 2007:

The moose lost his life, so did the Hyundai Santa Fe. Fortunately she only suffered some small guts from broken glass and some soreness for a few days.

Glad she was OK. Moose and cars often have some nasty results for the drivers / passengers. I have had some close calls with moose while driving at night. It will put the fear into you. :confused2:

Like the shirt, wdchyd! Looks like you're loaded for ... bear?
Jimmy Joe - the DEP guys said I could have the results in a few days, so I'll call next week and se what did him in and post results.
About the car mash-up: one of the guys told me that if there's any kind of vehicle speed, collisions with a moose are likely to be fatal for the driver due to the moose's mass center being at about the same height as the driver's head. So your gal was lucky!

Luckily she was just coming out of a 35 MPH zone and hadn't started to get back to highway speed when he appeared.
You should have seen the interior of that vehicle. Covered in all manner of moose innards. We went to the tow company's garage that same day to salvage what personal property we could out of the interior. I told her that in a day or so it wasn't going to be so pretty smelling in there.

Many years ago we were passed by a sports car (Austin 3000) with the top up. We then pulled in for a coffee but about five miles up the road we came upon the OPP, ambulance and tow truck clustered around the Austin. The car looked fine except that it had no windshield and the top was no longer there. The moose was dead and so were the people in the car....Just glad we didn't get the coffee to go

just wondering what your kubota lifts in regards to a mahindra 2816hst on the loader. We have to load moose on to trucks often here, but wasnt sure if the loader could do it ias its rated i think at 1050 lbs.

It's an LA724 loader which I think means it's good for 724 kg about 1600#, assuming you hang something heavy on the tail. I just got a set of used pallet forks, so when I get the next shipment of lime I think I'll try a little experiment ...

We were, too. We enjoyed having him around so much that we used a picture of him for our Christmas card this year. The Plant Manager pinged the guy at DEP for a post mortem report - he said it's still being processed and will send it our way when it's complete.

keep us updated on the post mortem report.

We have them occasionally around here but they are stealth. It allways amazes me how big animals can become invisible in the wink of an eye.

Sad ending indeed but maybe good sign moose making come back in your area tho.
