Montana 4340
I have a Montana 4340 and have been having running problems with the engine losing power then recovering. The mechanic after doing its regular service said it was the safety in the seat and they ordered a replacement but then found it did not fit and they are unable to find a replacement. Their advice is to disconnect the safety but cannot do it themselves for insurance reasons.
I can do it but prefer not to operate without a safety.

I壇 really appreciate some advice.

I don't blame you, I would want to keep the safeties in place if possible. You might be able to find the same part for another brand tractor, take it with you, a sharp parts man may be able to help you out.

Thanks for your reply. They told me they think the safety may be part of the seat itself so I need to check this out for myself. It has been serviced from new by the person that sold it but I can稚 reach him and heard he was not well.

Montana machines were made by LS who also make machines for New Holland and a few other brands. You might check with LS or a New Holland dealer to see if they have anything compatible.

The seat safety has changed over the years. They were a simple pressure switch in or under the seat. You should see two (probably two) wires going into the seat. Typically they need the contact (pressure in the seat) to start, but once it’s started you can get out of the seat. With that design I don’t know how you are getting a loss of power (read that’s probably a bad diagnosis) If you are having trouble getting it started try putting your knee in the middle of the seat.
Based on the odd diagnosis, the fact they believe the solution is to bypass the safety and you having difficulty contacting them I’d say it’s time to try a different mechanic. I’d also contact an internet dealer who sells Montana parts- see what they can do to help.

If you are having a loss of power, most of the time it’s a fuel issue. Junk in the bottom of the tank plugging the outlet, clogged filter etc.

Thanks for your very helpful advice - to be honest i had some doubts this was the issue - it's happened before occasionally when using the bush hog in long grass and it's cleared itself eventually...it starts fine and the engine idles perfectly and if you apply the hand brake you can jump off even with the PTO engaged.
