- 06 Montana 4940C/R4/FEL arched boom.
Hello folks. I have been reading here about the Montana line of tractors for some time now. After reading and looking, I went out and bought me a new 4940C with the new style arched boom FEL and with R4 tries for $26,400.00 from a dealer here in Baytown Texas. I’m going to try my best to tell you what I like and don’t like about my Montana. First off, the tractor looks as good as it works. The cab is the way to go if you spend lots of time out in hot hay fields and doing lots of dirt work jobs. The controls are well laid out inside the cab and the open floor concept is very nice. Now, there are some things in the cab that are in the way. The parking breaking handle down on the floor is easy to kick and step on when you are getting in and out of the cab. Montana designers you may want to move it out of the way. The vinyl covered seat is very hard and, does become uncomfortable after about an hour or so. It would be nice to have a cloth covered seat in the cab models like the other big three tractor companies have.
I did find myself reaching way down to find the three point draft and lift handles. The handles are a bit lower than what I like to reach down for. It is hard to reach way down for the three point lift control handle and try to work a box blade at the same time. The three point control and draft handles are in a good spot but, the handles could be taller so that there at your finger tips. Over all the cab is a very nice option and well worth the extra money. The tilt wheel, a/c, heat, radio, sun roof, lights, window wipers are all very nice. You can wear your Sunday best and never get dirty or hot in this cab. For the cab and controls, I’d give it an 8 on a scale of 1-10. 1 as being bad and 10 as being the best.
The power comes on strong with the Mitsubishi power plant under the hood. The engine is quite and has lots of low down power. I was surprised to see that I burnt 12 gallons of diesel fuel in just six hours of light mowing with a new Land Pride 2572 finish mower. I’m sure the fuel consumption will be better once in the engine become more broke in. I would love to see this engine with a turbo setup. The transmission shifted flawless from forward to reverse, high and low range and it has just the right gear for whatever you want to do or pull. So, for the engine and transmission setup, I’d give it a 9. Good Job Montana Engineers.
The hydraulic system worked flawless and smooth with good cycle times and loader speeds. This tractor is a dirt workers dream. The arched FEL is very nice also. It’s easy to see both sides of the bucket when doing loader work and also when taking the FEL on and off. I would like to see Montana move the FEL hydraulic connections on the cab models to an easier place to hook and un-hook. The FEL hydraulic connections are located under the cab on the right side making it a pain to lie down on your back to un-hook and re-hook the hydraulic hoses. The three point lift speed and drop is quick for box blade work and can be adjusted for slower lift and drop speeds when needed. The draft control feature worked very well when doing box blade work. The standard duel rear hydraulic ports are a nice feature also. The rear hydraulic ports will work good for a top and tilt setup when using a box blade. I would like to see Montana use the extendable draw bars ends on their three point lift arms. I have them on my John Deere and they make for hooking up to a piece of equipment much easer. For the hydraulic system and setup I’d give it an 8. Good Job Montana Engineers.
I’d have to say that I really like my new Montana 4940C over the other big three tractor brands. I have owned the other brands and have used them in all kinds of work. I looked very hard at all the other tractors out there before I bought my Montana. For the price and options, I couldn’t pass up the LS Montana brand. I hope my review helps somebody out when trying to decide on a new tractor. Let me know.
