I have on occasion been heard to complain about the large stretches of my farm that are given over to various utility easements. Water, sewer, electric, telecom, everything except fossil-fuel pipelines, and I'm sure if our county had any of those, they'd have found a way to put them here.
But no more whining. I just read an article by Prof. Michael McConnell of UAB about the original land purchase between the Iroquois Nation and the English settlers. He says, "Iroquois rights to use the Warrior's Path were confirmed. Henceforth, warriors were to be given safe-conduct passes that could be carried through the Valley, from one Justice of the Peace to another, giving them written proof of friendship and official protection." The Warrior's Path, aka US Highway 11, is the west edge of my property.
Now, that's an easement! Compared to a band of warriors looking to spread mayhem among the Catawbas, a crew from Dominion Power with chainsaws doesn't look threatening at all.
