Who owns or can otherwise comment on Modern Agriculture's rotary cutters. I am specifically interested in their 6' models, either the Competitor or the Super Sunshine? Both models are the same size/shape, and have heavy duty 7 guage decks and side rails. The Super Sunshine has a 65 HP rated gear, vs 48 HP for the Competitor--both use Omni Gear. On paper, these look very good.

My father bought a Highway Special 72" in 1975. We replaced it 16 years later (1991) with the same model just because he wanted a new mower to match the new tractor. We mow about 200 hours per year of mixed pasture and brush. Never! Ever! had any trouble! New mower has about 2500 hours and still looks new. Changed blades at 1000 hours and repainted as well. We're keeping it. Maybe my ten year old will buy the replacement with his son in 2031!

P.S. The man who bought the old mower is still using it in his lot clearing business!

JDMAN4020, That is what I was hoping to hear, and you also confirm that they have been making these cutters for a very long time. Apparently, not many people have ever heard about these cutters. I encourage people to at least look their line at Dragon Products. They seem to have the only line of galvanized decks, which come with a 10 year warranty. It helps that even their Competitor cutter has a 7 gauge deck. From a cosmetic standpoint, I am not sure I like that galvanized look, but I see the reason for it. They also make these in a dark gray to black painted finish. The heavy duty deck and Omni Gear construction is a good place to start. Mind you, I am not selling these, just trying to figure out whether I want to buy one. So far, I haven't found a reason not to put them near the top of my shopping list.

I can't offer alot of feedback, but I did buy one of their 5 foot rotary cutters this summer, used........ very well used. I've only done a little cutting with and it works well even though its seen some abuse. I'd have to speculate its 20 or so years old, judging by the style of the decals on it. Maybe that says something for their quality?

I have a 5' Modern rotary cutter that meets all my expectations. Since this is my first tractor and rotary cutter, I can't really compare it to others (have run others for limited time only), but I have had no problems with it in 50 hrs. I would recommend it.

RBD, Do you remember how much you paid for your 5' Modern? And what model was it? Also, do you know the actual weight?
