Mmmmmm Summer time

Came home through the country this evening.

There are still a lot of farms that the cancer of development haven't eaten up. It looked a little dry but very beautiful. There was an old fashoned smell of hay and cow manure in the air. Dry and dusty for mowing grass but I guess that is good for making hay. How is it going where you are?

I noticed just about the same thing the other day...

We're always humid here, and after I finished some work the other night I just walked down the gravel road and took in the heavy smells of grass, pollen, flowers, damp dirt, our creek, and whatever else nature mixes in. It was right before twilight, and the combination of impending nightfall and those natural smells took me back to when I was a kid and didn't want to come in and stop playing for the day.

Definitely summer. If Heaven is the best of your best possible dreams, it can only involve some small part of summer in the country.

NE's Mud Season is over, and the sights, sounds, and smells of real Spring is all around- it's beautiful and I love it

got up the other night and looked out the front window at the feshly cut front hay feild, and the entire thing was lit up with lightning bugs.... they must have been trying to signal the space aliens because there were thounsands of them

. It was not a bad back fly season this year (compared to some). We are now entering deer fly season, but they are easier to swat

LOL...yes, lived in NH for 20+yrs and Ive 'donated' my fair share of blood every year! Glad I dont have to do that anymore...

I used my 2 stroke lawn mower to fend off the various biting insects.

I do understand your love of spring/summer in NE...better than anywhere else I've ever lived. Guess it must be b/c winter is so long and warm weather is so fleeting?

Reminds me of something that happened back in the early 70's, while I was in the service. Came home one weekend with a friend from the west coast. It was early/mid June, so we grabbed a case of beer & headed down to a lake near here, to just sit around, talk to people, & relax. Around dark, my friend said he needed to find a head, so I pointed to the field adjacent to the parking area. He took about three steps, then stopped. After a few seconds, I turned & asked what was wrong. He raises his arm & points at the field, his mouth hanging open, & says nothing. The field was lousy with lightening bugs.

Then my friend says something intelligent like, "Wha...?" "Fire flies! Lightening bugs!" I said. He says, "I've never seen ANYTHING like that... It's AMAZING!" It was rather amusing seeing this guy chasing/catching lightening bugs like a little kid. Was also rather satisfying knowing he was seeing something he'd remember the rest of his life, thanks to me.
