I changed the gear box lube in my 60" BX2350 deck a couple of weekends ago. Does anybody have any good way to collect it as it runs out? There isn't hardly any room under the gear box. I just kept stuffing the paper towel style shop rags under it to catch the old grease. It seemed like it took over a half hour to drain it. I though about putting a little bit of pressure in the vent with a blow gun to force it out but wasn't sure if it was a good idea or not.

Does anybody have a good way to add the new stuff back in the gear box? The holes are very small. I ended up using one of the pump style oil cans with the small tip, it seemed to work well, but I had to keep filling it up.

I filled it with Amsoil, I don't plan on doing it again any time soon. I had about 130 hours on the deck, so I was long past due. I wouldn't have thought to change it excpet for reading a recent post on here. Guess I'll have to read all the owners manuals, not just the one for the tractor.

On my 54" the fill hole is a large (3/4 plus or minus) hole on top, and there are two small (3/8" plus or minus) holes on the side one drain and one for fill level. I tipped mine and poured the old fluid out the top.

I used the chinese take outs food tin pan. This way I can bend it to fit. When it gets full, I put cap on and the oil will drip out a little allowing me time to swap pans. then open up again.

I am not sure why you are having a problem filling up with new oil. I use the gear oil that comes with the small spout on it making it ideal to pour new oil in it.

I used a 12 inch aluminum pie pan and bend to contort into place. I have to plug the hole and empty a couple time but no mess.
My Kubota MMM had 90 hours on it and I was surprised the condensation and metal dust that came out when I changed it this spring. Definateky a good idea.

If you have an FEL, just take the deck off, pick it up and put it on sawhorses or something.

Dude,

The BIG bolt on top is the fill plug. Open it and the oil runs out. In 5 minutes. Prop the deck up and use whatever will fit under the edge of the gearbox. Dixie cups work.

And fill it throught the top fill, until oil spills out the upper plug on the side.

Thanks, I was filling it through the little plug on the side. My gear oil looked pretty clean, it wasn't in bad shape at all.

The first drain I propped up one side of the deck, put a little cup under the lower drain hole, then used the filler plug to control flow. When the cup fills up, just screw the fill plug in and (as you notice) the oil pretty much stops. Slip another cup in and open the filler plug again. Works great.

Last time I just sucked the oil out using a big syringe-type thing (looks like a grease gun). That took maybe two minutes to do the job.

I just went through this. The deck was already off and suspended from the FEL so I could service the blades. From the vertical position, I just used the FEL to lean it over and somewhat upside down. Then the fill plug was used to drain and refill.

Dodge Man,

Like you I couldn't find any way to keep oil from going everywhere. I even tried catching it in a zip lock bag. It didn't work and I ended up sucking it out the fill hole while the deck was off for the winter season. I did warm the shop up to 70 degrees or so and the oil wasn't quite as thick. I am an Amsoil user as well. Been using their products nearly 25 years.

I was in the middle of my oil change (60" deck) when the thread cropped up...

I thought about the pie plate etc but when the time came I could not find the right thing so I just removed the drain plug and sopped it all up with a towel (After removing the belt). When I went to refill, I noticed that there were a few small holes in the deck in low spots just under the drain plug. Next time..., I'll just be putting a drain pan -under- the deck and let it sit overnight.

I just put a couple 2x4's under the opposite side of the deck to prop it up a little and I use a plastic party cup to catch the fluid. As others here mention the total evolution for the fluid change is about 10 minutes and I use maybe two shop rags cleaning the deck up nice.
