Mixed component 12 volt 640 conversion

I was just gifted a 57 640 and had been told that it had been converted to 12 V. It looks like the previous owner had just hotwired it, no key switch, no terminal block and it certainly doesn't match anything remotely close to what I've seen on the web for wiring diagrams. The regulator looks like its 12V, the generator looks original 6V, the battery is 12 V and I am unsure of how to tell if the coil has been changed (though it looks old enough to be original). Lights not present nor are they necessary. I have about a $150 budget to get this running and have most general electrical equipment/materials around the garage. Can I run it with these components as a 12 V or should I make it as a 6V? I am assuming I should just tear out the wires and start anew.

Also - I have no experience with 6 V systems or converting them to 12 V.

In almost all of the nonrunners I buy I start by ripping out all the wires and rewiring the system. Since you already have the 12V battery, saving $80/$100 I would complete the conversion Just need to pick up a 12 volt alternator and coil With internal resister, a bracket and terminal block, key or toggle switch and some wires and you should be ready to go. I've never bought a kit, I've always rolled my own, so I don't know if the complete kit is available for under you $150 budget but might be something to check into.

agreed.. about 8' of wire and you can rewire it by hand.

the coil.. you can measure the primary with a GOOD ohm meter. close to 1.5 = 6v, close to 3 = 12v.. or just buy a 16$ napa IC14SB and not guess.

you need an ignition switch.

as for the generator... does it have cooling slots in the back ?
