We have a 1983 Mitsubishi D3850 that I believe has a fuel issue. It started when I was driving up a slight incline, tractor sputtered slightly, I checked the tank and it was low, so I turned it off and topped off the fuel tank. After driving for about 5 minutes, the tractor sputtered out again but this time died on it's own after 5-10 seconds of sputtering. After that I've tried starting it a few times and it will turn over fine, but won't fire up.
Since this seemed fuel related I started at the fuel filter, which is a bulb type. The fuel inside the bulb had a very rusty color to it, and a lot had become gooey and about 1/2" settled in the bottom of the bulb. I cleaned the filter thoroughly and when I open the valve on the filter clean diesel runs through it now. After that I followed the lined up to the fuel feed pump. When I took the pipe off the outlet of the feed pump it looked like it was primed with clean fuel. That's as far as I got. I wanted to seek some advice before following it up into the injector pump or checking the glow plugs, in case there's an easier solution. Does anyone have an idea what could be the problem or what my next step should be? This tractor is our #1 tool for our business and this down time is killing us. I've also linked a few pictures of the parts manual in case they help. Thanks in advance! -Michael
