Looking to purchase my first tig machine. I took a local welding class and haven't done much with tig welding but I would like to purchase a machine and start learning with it. I'm looking for a machine that I won't grow out of so soon. I really don't have any big plans right now as to what I would mainly be using it for. It would just be used around my property for what ever comes up. Down the road I might want to do some metal art etc. I have googled other brands and I just want to stay with either Miller or Lincoln. I'm debating between the Miller Diversion 180 and the Lincoln Tig 200. Price wise I will be able to get them both for within $25.00 of each other with rebates etc. I have a Miller 211 for mig welding and would like to stay with Miller but the Lincoln just seems like it offers more when comparing these two machines. Please let me know what your 0.02 is on what you would recommend and why you think one would be better to purchase over the other.

Personally if you wanted to stick with Miller, I'd buy a used Syncrowave (180 or 200). It would probably be cheaper and you'd have proven reliability and more flexibility for torch options. I'm pretty certain you'd "outgrow" the Diversion" plus you'd always get your money back if you were to sell the Syncrowave. Diversions don't seem to hold their value.

Or I wouldn't hesitate to take a used Lincoln Precision Tig in the same amp class for the same money.

IMHO of course ....

Problem with the Diversion is everything is pre set and you can't change anything. Plus the torch is fix'd right to the machine and you can't remove it. I've ran the Diversion at shows and they are ok but for similar money you can get a tig package with the same power that is fully featured and adjustable. Also the Diversion has no pulse if I remember. I haven't played with the Lincoln but I think it's got some adjustment and pulse. Lastly, Miller and Lincoln don't make these machines. They are re-branded like most out there today.

I looked at the diversion 180 and decided on the lincoln SW200. Here were the features the 180 lacked that the 200 had: ability to stick weld, AC balance not adjustable- fixed at 72%, AC frequency not adjustable-fixed at 120Hz, no pulse capability, 10# heavier. The one feature it has that I liked was fan on demand. It was also about $500 more than the lincoln.

China, Mexico, Poland and Italy are common with Miller- Hobart, ESAB, Lincoln and most Thermal Arc-Tweco units that everyone thinks are USA products. No-one makes welders in the USA anymore.

I got this and it's amazing, does it all.
