MIG or TIG: Which is better?

/ MIG or TIG: Which is better? #41
Pulse Mig can not replace Tig by any stretch. If you want to replace Tig with Mig you need to study up on Twin Pulse. I can Mig Pop Cans together with 3/64 wire as well as Out of Possition Aluminum and Stainless at Mig Speeds with Tig Results. Regular Pulse Mig will eliminate all of your Spatter woes but is a poor replacement for Tig. Twin Pulse Baby, Study up on it.. I own it and I sell it. Some users you may have heard of are Polaris, Arctic Cat, Featherlite Trailer and Nassco Ship Yard. To get in the know, Look up Thermal Arc SP, Fronius and OTC. Some of this equipment can be bought for not much more than the Miller 350P and can do so much more. It's just a question of need and knowledge. It gets much deeper than this.

That's OK, I don't drink pop, so I'll find another use for it. Now I just need to figure out how to get your old TIG. :D

Matt, trust me on this, just *borrow* 4Shorts' TIG.

I've heard of it but never tried it. Would be interesting to see and try it. There's more advancements in the welding world now than ever before. I think the day will come when one welding machine will do it all and all you'll be purchasing is the software and consumables to run it. Here's an example of just how things are changing.

Don't encourage him. He might show up at my door

Interesting video. Don't worry, my passport is expired, so you're safe from me showing up on your doorstep unannounced. :D

I forget that you have to have a passport to go to Canada now. Some things in life just plain suck!

Yes they do thanks to ***** bin Laden.

If we make it back to Denver next January for the National Western Stock Show, I'll let you know before we leave. Maybe we can get together while we're there.

She's dialed down so low the next step would be just to unplug the machine  I've used a 1/16th 2% ceriated tungsten and for a filler wire I use the .035 aluminum mig wire from my spool gun. As I said above. The next time I set up for thin stuff I'll do a sample. Lots of guys have done it. It's nothing new or spectacular.

We used to do this in my college welding class

Always told the new tig basic students when you can do this then you have learned something ...padawan

Tig is an art and has a longer learning curve than mig
you can teach most people to squirt metal faster
hence the welding term....mig sweat shop

I love tig or GTAW and it has it's place but if you want to get hi production welds mig or GMAW is the way

OK, drop me a line and we'll see if our respective schedules permit getting together.

My step brother was a welder on the Calloway, MO reactor. He said the majority of his welds were "x-rayed" for quality. He was very proud to be a welder on that job. He has been gone for a few years, the combination of fumes and cigarettes took their toll.

A few years back in my early working career, I was a (visual) welding inspector on nuclear power plants. AWS certified, etc... I saw a lot of welds from all different processes. MIG, TIG, Stick, GTAW, all positions, all joint configurations. These welders had to be almost perfect by procedure. Most had to test out to a radiography NDE.

I knew a TIG welder at one of the plants and for the entire time I was inspecting (maybe 8 years), not once did I see a bad weld from this guy. One of the finest welders I have ever seen. TIG welds on mostly small-bore, stainless, socket welds, smooth, without even so much as a start or stop puddle. I have seen my fair share of crappy welds too, but this guy was extrodinary. Really a pleasure to see his work.

No point, just sharing an experience. Man if I have seen one inch of weld, I have seen 10,000 miles of it, in all shapes and sizes. Even had a guy on the same job that welded in tight spots through a mirror. I had to inspect them the same way. He was good at it too. Bend a 7018 rod and go to town.

I have worked Calloway twice. A nice place. X-rayed welds are usually associated on the primary piping components of a safety-related system, normally the steam supply system (NSSS).

Most welders I have come to work around have a sense of ownership and pride. Each safety-related weld is stenciled with a specific welder's identification (in an area adjacent to the weld or weld joint).

I dont think there is such a machine or process in welding whereby 1 is good for everything. That said, the best all around welding equipment with the least cost would be a good AC/DC welding machine with high frequency attachment and a TIG Torch with gas regulator and a bottle of Helium.
I thot Argon was used preferentially these days. I there an advantage to Helium? Seems it might fly away too quick vs a heavier gas.

Overhead welding comes to mind.

Straight Argon is All Tig and Aluminum Mig. The rest is all mixed gas.

Answer is GTAW Tig welding is Better Quality Craftmanship More Skill required and more practice involed. GMAW good for mufflers body shops building trailers Pipe sheet metal but its dirty bright and loud. Its easy to learn a young child can wire weld in a few hours. Tig welding requires skill, Needs to be learned correctly. A good welding machine AC/DC CC CV will do it all MIg Tig and stick.
Should learn oxy acetalyne welding cutting grinding then Stick SMAW welding then GTAW tig welding. I made a brush guard for JD 4400 today using Miller Bobcat GTAW out of Stainless Steel.
I started with only 300# of argon left in bottle im not done yet but wil lbe tomorrow. All Free Hand one piece of 3/32"tungsten all cuts with porta band saw 1/16" 316L and 3/32" rods Grill Guard 3rd pic.jpg and scrap pipe 1" & 1/2" sch 40 3/8" round stock. i used a small #6 cup and set gas on 15 cfm's i still have 200# of argon. thanks
