My GSD Mickey passed way in my arms this morning at 1:00 AM.
Yesterday when I awoke, he wasn't in the bedroom with me. He has always wanted to be close to me and would follow me from room to room in past years but the past couple of years he was getting to be an old puppy with joint pain and hip trouble and had difficulty getting to his feet but he always managed to get himself up and follow me from room to room if I stayed in one for any length of time. This time when i awoke, he wasn't at the foot of my bed, I found him laying down in the bathroom. He didn't want to get up so I helped him up and supported him as we made it out into the living room. All my little boy wanted to do was to lay down.
I have known for some time that he wasn't long for this world and when I saw how bad he had become just overnight, I knew that I would have to take him to the vet's to be euthanized. I decided to take him in the morning.
This past evening, I tried to give him some of his favourite treats, dog milk bones and baloney but he didn't even want to eat those. He did eat some ice cream with me.
Later I laid down with him and held him and stroked his fur and scratched his neck and head and told him what a good boy he was and how much I loved him and I comforted him as much as I could.
He quietly passed away in my arms as I held him.
