I have a Massey Ferguson 65 perkins diesel with mutipower transmission I have spent a fortune on repairs only to have it fail after a short time don't mind the leak but need engine braking.
A while back Big Dean in suggested I replace it with a straight 6 or 8 speed transmission from a salvage, that will bolt right in place of the multipower transmission. Will any 6 or 8 speed mf 65 tractor transmisson work ?

What has actually failed?? Did something fail or did the linkage fail. There's a bolt[clamp thingy] right on top of the trans that sometimes comes loose and doesn't allow the multipower to engage?? might be a simple fix.check it out before looking to replace the trans.Larry

Can't you just use the side that is not out and remove the lever? Ken Sweet

Yes I have checked the clamp wish that was the problem. My problem is that after taking it to two tractor repair $hops it will work for a very short time then quit. First it starts leaking then no high range. I can run it in low range but no engine braking. I have lots of hills really need engine braking. I would just get something else but had engine completly gone thru less than 300 hours ago and it starts and runs like new. Big Dean used to anwser lots of massey questions here and on other sites. I have his cds on the 65 very helpful, he had told me replacing it with a straight 6 or 8 speed would be the best way to overcome this problem, sounds good to me, However didnt have the money at the time. Now I cannot get ahold of him anymore and havent seen a post by him in a long time dont know what transmissions he said would work. Mine is a 1963 or 64.

It's too bad that it's doing that. From your answer you have been taking it in for repairs and not doing it yourself. So I have no idea what's been done to yours. I've rebuilt the valve on mine as well as changed the clutches in the clutch pack, not sure what the shops did for you.If the clutches are worn out it won't engage that was the biggest problem with mine. The rings inside the valve cause the oil leak but it'll still engage the clutches.Mine acted like what your saying yours is doing, untill I took the clutch pack out and replaced all the disc's.They were worn down to the metal. With the new[relined] disc's it works fine now.One other qiuck thing you can do is take a look at the Multipower's hydralic oil filter[its a washable type] located behind the grill in front of the rad near the top corner of the rad.Un screw the bowl and check and clean it out[could be a problem as well] Before you try to do a trans change there another thing you can do.I've heard somewhere about welding one gear in the trans that'll keep the trans in high range getting rid of the free wheeling aspect of the trans. I'am not sure where I've read this.Larry

Yes I have heard that to and also that you can bolt the clutch pack together with bollts to lock it in high there is a pic of the lockup on Bigdeans cd but it is just a pic nothing else not much help. I have heard you need to block off the line if you do this but there is no mention on the cd about it.
I cannot find anything helpful about welding or bolting anyplace.

You are correct on hiring the work done did not have the time to do it myself, however I am capable of doing it and will take the time since I have not found a shop that is honest. I was told many things were replaced seals, shafts, clutches, etc. even shown parts that there supposedly replaced what a crock. The last time second try different shop it was repaired what a joke it started leaking and lost engine braking the first day I used it. The shop owner more or less told me, so sue me. Maybe I should have but was so disusted with the whole deal just parked it in the shed and let it set, anyway I realy like this old tractor and would like a fix for the mutipower.
Thanks,
Lew

Just bought a MF 65 with multipower and found I have no engine braking as described above. Any cheap solutions? I tried the easy ones referred to above. Any help would be appreciated.

Just in case you don't know, engine braking only works in high multipower.
