Not enough
I'm looking at a massey ferguson mf40 with considerable blowby on one cylinder. I found rebuild kits for ~300 which is within reason for me. My question is how disassembled do i need to take the tractor to do this? Is it just a matter of removing the hood, or do i need to remove the loader as well?

Personally, I'd remove the engine from the tractor. The crankshaft should be checked to see if it is within specs., on the rods & mains. You can do it yourself with a platigauge kit, or remove it, and take it to a machine shop/engine rebuild shop, and have them check it. If there are a good many hours on it, it probably needs cleaned up a bit. All the one's I've had, that need turned, I let the machine shop get the rod, and main bearings too. They may cost a bit more through them, but if there is a problem with clearance, you can go back to them, and not deal going through a mail order house.

I reccomend you remove the loader arms simply for ease of access to the engine.
If you only remove the head and replace the head gasket you will need to remove the hood (some bolts will be seized, expect to replace them) then the fuel tank, (drain it first and turn off fuel cock) NOTE there are 4 bolts to undo. The back 2 bolts have to be removed completely and the FRONT 2 can be backed off and left in situ. They are very awkward. Disconnect the main fuel line from the tank to the first filter, AND also the fuel return line.
After the fuel tank has been removed you then remove the fuel lines from the injector pump to injectors. Note , the lines are metal and clamped togather. On the 135 they can be removed as a set, you may be able to do the same.
I think the head studs have to be torqued in a specific pattern, double check the manual.
Lastly, if you decide to remove the sump for any reason be aware the sump is a structural component and is Heavy.
Good luck.

Hello Fatjay, assuming what you mean by blow by is combustion gasses going past the rings into the crankcase then you are planning to replace 1 or more cylinder liners and piston rings? If yes then I would want the loader out of the way. The Massey manual says that the liner can be removed and replaced without dropping the crank so you don’t have to separate the engine from the transmission, of course if you find issues with the crank journals when you pull the piston/rod assembles then you will have to split the tractor. Splitting the tractor is actually easier when the loader is still attached to the hardnose, the front axle, axle carrier, hardnose, rad, are held upright and stable by the loader. BTW is this a gas or diesel Perkins?
