Massey Ferguson 35
I am working on restoring a Massey Ferguson 35. Before purchasing the tractor a fire had destroyed the wiring and the regulator/control box was missing. I have purchased a Delco GDR6006 regulator and am working on installing it. According to my service manual the original control box had D-E-A-F terminals whereas the new regulator has F-BAT-L-GEN terminals. I am hoping someone can help me figure out how to connect the new regulator. Everything else on the tractor is original and it is a 12 volt, positive ground system with the Z134 gas engine.

As far as I know, 12v should be negative ground...

What year is the tractor?

1964 and it is definitely positive ground.

Is this a European market tractor? (of which I have no idea whether it would be + or - ground)

1964 with a z134 should be negative ground in the USA.

Back then I was taught FADE. F-Field, The outside of the dynamo. A-Amp meter, The live from the battery that goes through the amp meter. D-Dynamo, The wiring from the middle of the dynamo and E-Earth, I think you guys call ground, but the common part of the battery that is connected to the whole of the tractor.

Thanks for your reply Shaeff

When we first picked up the tractor a few months ago the previous owner had burnt most of the wiring from a fire. He had replaced some of the wiring but the regulator/control box was missing altogether. As the battery was no good I replaced it and, thinking it was negative ground, tried to hook it up accordingly. As soon as I connected the second post sparks flew. I looked in the copy of the service manual and it did indicate a positive ground. Hooked it up that way and it has worked fine the past couple of months. As there were no gauges or regulator I decided to install the gauges and regulator. After doing so I tried to start it and only got a click at the solenoid. Disconnected all the wires from the regulator but still nothing. I pulled the starter and tried to bench test it but again it sparked like crazy and did not turn. I spoke to an elderly Massey mechanic and he indicated it should not matter which way the leads are connected. He was also surprised to hear that it was negative ground but that is the only way it has worked, at least up until now.

1) The first thing is to probably get straight if it's + or - ground (typo?).
2) The starter will work in the correct direction with either polarity.
3) You probably made a wiring error when you tried to connect up the gauge and VR.
4) What made you choose the Delco GDR6006 VR?
5) Can you post a schematic from your service manual?
6) Get your starter and generator tested at an auto parts place.
7) As was stated in another forum, put in an alternator and convert to negative ground.

I have attached an image of the wiring schematic I am using.
I chose the GDR6006 as it was recommended by the local electrical repair shop.
I pulled the starter and tried to bench test it. Got a whole lot of sparks and the starter did not turn.
I had the regulator hooked up as follows: F to F on the generator, BAT to solenoid, GEN to A on the generator.

Got the starter fixed. Took it apart again and the insulator on the inside of the post was gone. Replaced that and the starter now works fine.

I understand the generator needs to be polarized by shorting the BATT and GEN posts. Does the key need to be on to do this? Does it need to be done each time the battery is disconnected or if the battery goes dead?

You shouldn`t need to `polarize` anything. Wire everything up as per your diagram. put the battery on last, positive to earth. there shouldn`t be any sparks if the ignition is off. Then go through a slow start up system. Turn the key, make sure everything is OK. No funny smells, ignition light on. Try cranking for a second or two. Stop switch off, check for anything hot or smelling. I think and hope you will find everything will go well. When you get it running, obviously the ignition light will go out.
