Hello,
i am new to working on tractors first off, a friend of mine bought a i believe 58 MF65 tractor and i am working on it for him. it is a g176 cont 4 cyl with a tsx 695 carb, i am either missing something or just plain confussed, there is fuel getting to the carb but will not stay running its like starving for fuel is there a fuel pump somewhere that i can't find or is it gravity feed? it does start then acts like its out of fuel i cleaned everything and put 10 gallons in it so it should have plenty of fuel the sediment bowl is full , I need so help on this so anyone please and thanks.

Your M-S TSX should have a bowl drain plug. Open the tank valve fullly, hold a suitable container under the carb and remove the plug. The fuel should CONTINUOUSLY gush out like a cow peein' on a flat rock. If it dribbles or is intermittent,, start at the carb inlet elbow and check the screen there for trash that got past the sediment bowl. Make sure the vent in the fuel cap is clear. Make sure the filter above the sedeiment bowl is clear and any fuel lines are clear and not kinked or bent. Rap the carb with a block of wood in case you have a "hung" float. Check the fuel outlet from the tank for clogging.

If you can't get the flow improved, the chances are the float valve is partially clogged or there is some crud in the fuel bowl that won't allow the float to drop. you'll have to pull the carb to check that out.

Are you choking it to start and is it dying when you let the choke off? if so it could be the ignition. Do you have a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK, the color of lighning? a spindly blue, reddish, or yellowish spark won't cut.If you don't have the requisite FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK, better start checking out the primary ignition circuit.

It has good spark, new plugs ,wires cap, rotor, points the tank i pulled cleaned and blew out, sediment housing i also pulled and cleaned, new inline filter, took the line off from the filter to the carb blew it out and cleaned it. had the carb off cleaned it but did not put a new carb kit in. that is tonights project just came in. is there suppose to be a spring from the float to the needle under it? there isn't one on it now.

Yeah but what does the flow from the bottom of the fuel bowl look like? Did you check it? And you got a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK?

There's no spring between the float valve pintle and the float. Some kits have a retainer on the pintle.

The SAE grade of oil is determined by the ambient temperatures you operate in. Your tractor was probably designed to use SAE 30W HD and you still can for ambients above about 20F. If you use 10W30 or 10W40 your probably good to -5Fto 110F. if you are in the south you can probably use 15W40 or 20W50 year around. You'll need an owners manual to give you the correct
temperature ranges.
DO NOT USE GEAR OIL OR HYDRAULIC FLUID! You'll need transhydrauic fluid for the tranny, hydraulics, and rear axle as they share a common sump. The original oil was GL-1 rated mineral oil and you can find that at NAPA. HiTran is MF brand and there are several generic brands that may meet your MF spec. You probably ought to consider replacing the hydraulic filter if you have one. There are most likely three drains at the bottom and one fill on top of the tranny near the shift lever. I don't know the capacity but it's probably like 30 quarts. You fill it til it runs out the bottom bolt hole of the side plate wherethe transhydraulic fluid dip stick is located.

If you don't allready have one, find an owners manual and a factory shop manual (not an IT manual). Ebay is a good source for them.

Your shop manual should provide that info also but you say it doesn't. There is an MF65 owners manual on ebay right now($15.75 +shpg)
