Recently I have had problems with my MF 5465 tractor. When operating I have had instances when shifting gear where it stops, the numbers on the "Dyna-4" unit (I'm not sure what it is called) start blinking. I've seen different "patterns" of blinking, but it is usually between the gear I was in and the gear I shifted to. I.e. 3-4-beep-3-4-beep. When this has happened I have usually just shut off the tractor and started it, and the problems have been gone.

Now I can't even get it into gear. Or, at least I can't get it driving. For example, I start the tractor, i click on the Dyna-4 shift lever and it goes into gear (lets say B-2). Then, when I flip the steering wheel lever either in forward or backward, I get the same error as described above. It blinks between gears 2-3 and beeps, then repeats.

I have posted a video of the problem here:

So, I have done some research, searched the internet, to try to identify the problem. Here are my possible culprits:
  • There are some reporting problems with the clutch pedal switches. But, aren't these problems supposed to stop the tractor from starting?
  • Faulty electrical wiring.
  • Faulty sensors.
  • Faulty Dyna-4 control unit.

Do someone have an idea of how I can identify the specific problem?

Well. Now I've had a service guy from dealers to look at the tractor. I weren't there to watch, but he used an electronic tool/diagnostic unit. He said it showed a problem with reverse and forward electronic valves. Since both were erroneous, he concluded there had to be something wrong with either the wiring between the power shuttle lever or the power shuttle lever itself. He ordered a new lever to try to replace, to see if that fixes the problem. I have to say, I'm mighty worried he is on the wrong track.

Since this problem has been happening more and more often - and now, it's a constant problem - I think this is either faulty wiring problem or there may be something wrong with the Autotronic box. Anyone have any input?

The problem was solved by replacing the bottom of clutch (BOC) switch.

In the past, electrical problems could be challenging for the average mechanic. But today, with as sophisticated as tractors have become its is so ever difficult for the average mechanic to work on them without a laptop.

This is not just happening to tractors, as I understand it my new chain saw has a microprocessor on it adjusting the carb based on temp, barometric pressure, engine speed, all to get optimal performance.

Glad your mechanic was able to get you running again.

Well, that does it. My good old strictly mechanical chain saw will be repaired ad infinitum and never replaced. The chief culprit at the head of the line of idiots is the one who first produced a car without a direct connection between the accelerator pedal and the throttle on the fuel injection or carb. Should have been executed and saved us all.

Yep, that dag cable going to your carb was really reliable and you knew just what the problem was if it ever broke. Technology has certainly produce some great innovations, but sometimes you wonder isn't the simple brute force stuff pretty good and doesn't need any tweaking with all the fancy controls.
