MF 451 owners - any problems/gripes?

Looking at a MF 451 and I had read (I think on here) that someone had mentioned that people had been having problems with the 451 model (and not the 431/461...etc...tractor is a simple little 4wd model with not many hours....I would not expect a Massey to have any problems (from past experience) but you never know with the build quality of everything these days...

The 451 is a good tractor, and a good all around tractor.When you put a Sub-Soiler behind it , And only when you stand up while plowing it has a sound of it's on . It sound's good under a load.

The 400 series did have some early quality control issues. They seemed to have smoothed out the bumps as the series continued. Not sure any individual model in the 400 series had any more or less "troubles" than another.

The 500 series addressed these issues quite well. In all likelyhood, a used 400 series would have by now, either had it's "issues" and been dealt with, or, was a trouble free unit from the get go.

we've got one with about 450 hours on it (bought it new in 2003) and had a few little things mostly in the first year - had to replace a starter switch, and had to have them out to adjust something with the hydraulic during the first week (I can't remember what it was now, but a warning light was on when it shouldn't have been).

Use it run hay machinery (Kuhn 6' disc mower, and NH 273 square baler) and other sundry farm stuff like moving rocks, snow, & manure piles.

The fuel float got stuck a couple of years ago, and while it works now (started working as randomly as it stopped) I don't trust it and use the piece of grass method.

When we were shopping it was the most tractor we could get for the money - a workhorse with no frills.

My 451 died while pulling a No Till Drill out of no where. If I hit it with Starting Fluid it will start up. Check fuel level and added some anyway. Hit it again with S/F, started up. Waited a bit, check this and that, tried again and it started on its own, no S/F. Backed up to more level ground, since I was on a bit of a hill, and died in the process. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Have you checked the fuel filter? Also check fuel shut off solenoid.

I had not. It occurred after it got dark and I just tried the starting fluid do ID the problem. I have a 2004 New Holland and never had this occur. I got a fuel filter the next morning and put it on that afternoon and wallaaah!! Magic!!! I was even able to get the seeding done. Thanks for the input!!

The PTO won't stop spinning, you can grab it to stop it....the New Holland never did that either. What kind of job am I looking at and cost. Something about an internal PTO brake??

Adjust PTO clutch per operators manual.
