Hi all,
I have a late 70's Massey Ferguson 265 that has a pto issue. The pto won't stop turning . It engages well when I use the lever to put the pto in gear to run my bush hog, baler, swather, etc. When I disengage it with the lever, the pto does disengage, buts when I stop running the equipment, it still slowly turns on its own.

To work on the pto, will I have to split the tractor, or is there an access point someplace to make adjustments that I haven't read about. The manual I have doesn't give much help, and thought others here might have come across this.

Thanx in advance for any info.

If your manual doesn't explain pto service and adjustment, add one to your collection that does. With nothing connected to shaft,it's common for shaft to rotate. That is very good reason to keep the cover on shaft when pto isn't being used. It doesn't have enough force while "freewheeling"to operate equipment but there's enough to grab and twist clothing, long hair and such.

Thanx for reply,
Actually, when my swather or baler is connected to the running tractor with the pto disengaged, the swather or baler reels still turn, although slowly. I always shut down the tractor, when hooked up, before I get out of the cab, so I'm not sure of I could stop the reel from turning, by hand (and I'm not sure if I want to, anyways). As for a plastic cover on the shaft, they were long gone before I got the equipment, (and they are both New Hollands, so I believe the covers are permanent metal covers anyways). 90% of my equipment is from the 70's, so any plastic covers are history.
My main concern is for my dog who loves to follow me into the field looking for marmots and moles, and worry she will get too close when I head out. Also when I have the bush hog raised, as the blades turn. I often don't hook up the pto until I'm ready to cut, but that means crawling in and out of the tractor twice with worn out knees to hook up, and again to go back to to the house.

Never go near the shaft will it's moveing, even slowly moveing, don't touch it
The shaft cover I was referring to is metal and go's over output shaft on tractor. The swather and baler reels shouldn't move with pto dis-ingaged,,,,,,UNLESS,,,,,,you are moveing lever past N and into ground speed pto drive. Even if ground speed is engaged, pto should move ,,,,,,ONLY,,,,,when tractor wheels move. There are optional hydraulics and pto types to match transmission. I'm not familiar with pto function on 12 forward-4 reverse Multi-power. You should identify your pto then get a shop manual for it. I agree it's dangerous should be adjusted asap to alow it to be stopped.

Hi jaxs,
To my knowledge there never was a cover around the tractor pto. My f-i-l bought it used about 20 yrs ago. When he passed, I inherited it, and I've never seen a shroud on it. Anyways, I've downloaded a shop manual from bestmanuals.com, and haven't seen anything about adjusting the pto, only how to drain hydraulic fluid, removing retainer plates, etc. to replace bearings, etc.
I'm not even sure where the nearest MF dealer is, (could be 100-200 miles away I think), and the farm machinery dealers in my area that I've spoken to, can barely get parts for the vintage equipment I have anyways.
Anyways, I make sure nobody gets near the tractor till I shut down, but sometimes my dog doesn't listen very well.
Thanx again.

Dont think there are any adjustments, it's probably a worn or damaged PTO clutch or the valve that controls the oil that engages the clutch leaks so it never release as it should.

Thanx agvg,
Sort of figured that too, but was hoping there was a relatively simple cure, like maybe slightly tightening the bolts on a rotovator shaft slip clutch. Guess I'll just have to live with it, I usually don't hook up the pto until I'm at the work site. Think I'll wait to split the tractor when something worse gives up. (That'll be fun, because I think I'm going to have to figure out a way to remove the ROPS cab to access the split point)
