MF 265
Hello all, new to me 79 MF 265 with injection pump leak at the main body pump head seal. Trying to redo a few of the previous owners attempted fixes, i bought a rebuild kit and I&T manual (Big mistake) and went through it with no problems.

I got it back on the machine but the top cap gasket with the kit (paper material) appeared to be leaking a little (Anyone know where i can get a top gasket seal that is better then the paper one in the kits? Inspection window has a rubber one, would prefer one like that for the top cap.) In my efforts to resolve the top cap leak (where no leak was before) one of the top cap studs broke.

It is a double thread stud two different thread sizes, part # 7123-527. Everywhere i am finding the part i see a disclaimer that all vendors have switched to a metric version of this bolt and while they have had good success with 'just cranking it in' and it being a tight fit, I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction to a better solution besides salvage yards or making my own.

It is a 1/4-28 x 1/2" long bolt with a 10-32 stud ~ 1.5" tall that peaks out of the top cap. Most specialty fastener shops said it would be a special run but have minimum order quantities. I just need 2. I went as far as to check the local hardware stores for the bolts so I could weld them back to back but am having trouble finding the 10-32 locally. Online, I found them in a minimum of a 50 pack.

I am reluctant to take a tap to the pump housing, seems like overkill for these two simple studs.
I am reluctant to crank in a metric thread stud into standard thread housing for obvious reasons
I am contemplating drilling out the top cap holes and going with a 1/4-28 stud, but what about new top cover gaskets for where the studs come out of the cap? Can I make the ones in the rebuild kit work and seal properly by boring the center a little more on the gasket? Where could I source a 1/4"-28 replacement acorn nut gasket?

Suggestions on where to find a donor cav pump for this part?

Most of my local service facilities send the pumps off for repair so they are no help, which was in line with the suggestion by the I&T manual.

Clearly I can't be the only genius to do this to a dpa/cav injection pump? I even went as far as to call a few salvage yards. the techs who checked the yard said
All of the injection pumps were already pulled from the massey's. (Probably refurbished and resold long ago)

Recommendations for the correct replacement part are much appreciated.

First I would have explored whether there is something else that has the same Perkins AD3.236 engine, such as Claas Consul combine harvesters parked in the fence row some where.
Another solution is to get on a rod and two dies with the right thread and make them Your self.
For better gaskets you can buy sheets of gasket paper in the desired material and thickness and make yourself by placing the sheet over the lid and tapping gently along the edge with a ball hammer

Tor,

Thanks for the heads up. I have a roll of grey/black gasket maker, used it to make a new gasket for the timing cover inspection panel. The kit for the injection pump didn't have this gasket. While it is thicker then the paper gasket that came in the kit, it is still a paper/cardboard material which in my mind may leak again.

When I called the salvage yards, I mentioned that it is a lucas/cav dpa style pump. I am aware that the cav/dpa style pumps were on different machines (fords, allis, massey, etc) and mentioned that as well but since I wasn't boots on the ground, no luck. Also there is limited salvage yards in my area that I am aware of, John deere specialist comes to mind.

Sounds like if the pump isn't destroyed, the salvage yards rebuild them and sell them separate rather then part them out.

I also looked at the hardware store(s) to find bolts to make my own, still haven't sourced the 10-32 bolt locally or in less than a 50 pack.

I guess I will bite the bullet and buy the 50 pack and make 48 spares to sell to anyone else who has the problem.

If you know someone that does electrical work they'll have a box full of 10-32's it's common in electrical work. All ceiling J boxes have them. When you buy a light fixture or ceiling fan it comes with 10-32 screws for installation. No need to take out your switches in your house because they are 6-32. :) Just an idea.

If the thickness of the gasket is not important just use gasket maker sealant and don't put a gasket. Just follow the directions carefully. Where it says clean it must be clean.

All the light fixtures I have ever done are 8/32, we just finished another house and they were the. Never the less 10/32 is very common there must be a shop somewhere around where you get a couple. I don't think a box would be too bad considering what you are fixing.

What was I thinking. You're right they are 8-32. I only done this for 36 years before I retired so I'm still learing. Glad you caught that.

If all you need is a 10-32 stud on top of a 1/4" bolt, drill and tap the bolt head, screw in a machine screw with thread locker then cut the head off of a screw. You should be able to make a couple of those in 10 minutes. It should have been done by now. :)

10-32 and 1/4-28 are standard fine threads. Every hardware store should have them.
