Over the time Massey Ferguson used the AD3-152 in their tractors, it came in a variety of hp ratings from as low as 30.5 pto, to as much as 52 pto hp.
My 150 rolled off the Detroit assembly line with a Perkins diesel rated @ 38.2 on the pto. Shortly after the warranty expired, I had an old buddy who worked at Republic Diesel in Louisville Ky do a "tune up" on it. We turned up the fuel screw until it dynoed 47hp on the pto. Some 41 years later, she still cranks out 47hp with no ill effects whatsoever.
It was explained to me (back at the time I bought the tractor ) by someone from Massey Ferguson (who owned Perkins then) that the British government imposed a tax on tractors being exported, based on hp ratings. One cut off point from a lower rate to a higher rate was 40 hp. Since the engines used in the US built 100 series were also used in the UK built 100 series, they were produced at that level of "tune". (38pto hp) Just a guess on my part, but the 231 might have been "de-tuned" to meet a certain export or import taxation level, depending on where it was built/where it was marketed. Again, just a guess.
