mf 165
I recently purchased a mf 165 The multi power works, but after awhile (2-3 minutes) it kicks down to lower speed when in high range. About the same speed as in low range. It is not free wheeling, so is still in high range. Then in a little bit it will go back up to speed. Then later will do it again.
Would apprecate any help on this.

Thanks
William

Make sure the hydraulic oil level is not low, that's how it will act if it is. If the tractor has a loader 1/2 inch over full will help too. If level is OK, the Multi-Power pump inlet screen may be getting plugged. Too thick, wrong oil will cause trouble too. Tractor lift cover must come off to get at the screen, so I woul try everything else first.

I've used tractors for 60 yrs. First time to use multipower, and I don't like it. I have a lot of steep ground, so don't like free wheeling in low, and hard to shift in high. Is there an easy way to disconnect the multipower?

No there is not an easy way to disconnect a multipower.
What do you mean "hard to shift in high"??? Please explain.
A correctly adjusted multipower should shift easily up or down.
After a while you will adapt to the multipower. When you feel the start of freewheeling going down hill it will become automatic reflex to shift into high multipower. The ability to down shift with out using the clutch made the job that much easier. The country I grew up on is, rolling through to too steep for a bulldozer.
I cut my teeth on a multipower (135 and 178) and my style was seriously cramped when I had to stick shift every gear on other tractors.

We have had several 165's with multipower. they were all hard to shift when in high. I always shift to low multipower to change gears. This will become 2nd. nature......just reach up pull it down and shift.I wish I had a dollar for every time I done that.

Hello reedwilliam, do you mean shifting the gear stick to neutral when stopped?
Multipower gearboxes have a park brake that engages in high multipower to told the tractor on a hill to assist with hill starts. To disengage the park brake you select low multipower (make sure the hand brake is on) and shift the gear stick to neutral. DON'T use the multipower park brake to stop as this will wreck the multipower and you will have an expensive repair.
Lastly, these gearboxes are "constant mesh", you have to match the engine speed to the gear speed. If you clash gears going up then you are probably trying to change to fast. The technique to down shift is called double clutching.
