Any ideas on getting it out of positraction? Using right brake does not release it as it should. Perhaps brake is frozen?

Jack one of the rear tires off the grd and rock the tire back and forth lifting up on the engagement foot lever at the same time maybe it will help to release everything inside. hopefully that will work for you.How long have you owned the tractor or is it new to you.And did this lock up while one tire was spinning and you stepped on the foot lever to engage the posi lock ???. Need to know more in order to help more.

Thanks Larry I 'll try that tomorrow. They MF is new to me within the last month. I don't remember pressing the foot lever but probably did it accidently as it was not engaged when I bought it. I don't know if the right brake is stuck--it was just a wag for the stuck posi. Don't know that else I can provide as info but will answer all ? just ask. This is my first "BIG" tractor and I believe I got a good one.

Thamks for your quick reply and input

do check for stuck brakes and stuck diffy lock pedal. on a ford it is onthe right side back near the axle. not sure on a MF.

We have a mf255. Basically same tractor just newer. It won't disengage the diff lock once pressed. It's located at your right heel. When you engage it take a big screw drive or pry bar or crescent wrench handle and pry the foot pedal back up and it will disengage. We just try not to engage the diff lock. Hope this helps.

What I have found is the engagement pin in the diff housing that the pedal moves dries out from whatever factory lubrication was applied and starts to stick, usually in the engaged position.

On my 250, I used small screwdriver to hold aside the small dust boot and use the spray can straw and try to force so of the white lithum grease that sprays thin then thickens in there and start tapping it with a brass hammer.

Once I got enough grease in, and set up enough vibration to make the grease move along the pin, it freed up.

Some more sprays and tapping and it works fine. I now make a point of lubricating that pin behing the dust boot at then of every mowing season, and it seems to have helped, I can step on the diff lock while working in the muck, and feel pretty certain it will release when I need to make that turn before the barn......unlike the first time it locked up on me. The sheetmetal on a pole building does not resist tractors very well.

i bet a penetrant spray would ge in even better than spray grease.

You are right that it would, I use PB Blater and Kroil with a lot of success. But in this case, I could see bits of the old dried out oem grease when I pryed the dust boot back, so I was trying to "repack" the cavity with something I could get in there to get me through the weekend. It only took a few minutes before the diff lock popped loose, and it was obvious when l pressed on the diff lock again the grease helped.

I have to split my 250 to change out the transmission housing this winter, i'll find out if there is a OEM spec grease to use.
