I am curious to the type of oil (viscosity) and amount that is required to replace the oil in my MF 150 with the Continental z145?

I run 15/40 Diesel rated oil. I've got a 135 MF with the Z145 and that's what I run..does good in winter or summer. It takes 5 quarts, 6 with a filter...see tractordata for this stuff. BobG in VA

Thanks bob. I went to tractordata and I thought the capacity rating was just for the perkins motor and didn't mention viscosity. using a diesel oil seems like a better idea to the fact it has more cleaning additives. Very impressed with the MF and z145. Had a IH 450 probably few years older and taller in height and nothing in power compared to this one. Father worked out a trade and felt screwed until I finally used it to brush hog and not only was I not in the trees but felt more stable on the inclines as well as handled the thickest of brush. Now to figure out why the hydraulic controls move from vibrations and change the heights.

I also run a 15W-40 diesel oil, specifically Shell Rotella. According to the experts, these old engines require zinc which diesel oil still has. It has also been recommended that you use a zinc breakin additive available from Lucas for additional protection continuously. The zinc helps protect the lifters and cam from wear. Zinc in its old form has been phased out for EPA clean air standards and is not in currently produced oils in its old form from what I have been told. The added cost is far less than an engine rebuild. Here a website that explains what zinc does for an engine. Hope this helps. I'm no oil expert, just passing on what I have been told by an engine rebuild machinist.
