Had the day off so I spent it with my new used MF 135. Changed Hyd. filter and replaced the oil filter assembly with the upgraded spin on filter head.

Before, the 3 pt. controls would not work properly. Draft worked, position did not. Filter I replaced looked like it was the original from 1967...very clogged. Replaced with new filter, filled with new fluid and it works like new. Amazing what a new filter will do!

Question...how can I tell if the water pump is working and how to tell if the oil pump is working properly?

Now my "girl" has new fluids all around, replaced antifreeze last week. Also replaced seat. Looking like new.

Nothing like little bonding time. ;)

jcmseven- if cooling systems on these tractors are like autos (as far as I know they are), you should be able to verify water pump operation by looking into the radiator, cap off, as it warms up. As the coolant thermostat opens, you should be able to observe good fluid flow in the radiator. That 135 is older than my oldest motorcycle; keep 'er running!

Both water pump and oil pump are a tough design on the 135. My 71 135 still had both original pumps, and they both were still working. I did replace the oil pump during the motor rebuild, but reused the water pump and it did fine. As long as the shaft on the water pump is not falling apart, it will still push water ok. Of course the impeller could be worn out, and if thats the case you will have noticed overheating issues if youve run it long enough. The slower turning oil pump design helps it last, but it does all depend on maintenance and what kind of grit was running through it. I would be willing to bet that the oil pump is producing at least 30 psi, do you have an oil pressure guage? Also how bout a few pictures of the beast? Good Luck, TB

I should have added, it was a tough design on the Perkins gas and diesel motors. Couldnt say for sure about the continental motors. TB

The oil pressure stays around 60psi. Really not too worried about the oil pump with this pressure reading. Now the radiator is another story. I have drained and refilled the coolant, even replaced the gauge. Thought the old gauge was not working due to it staying pegged at 0 degrees. Well, the new gauge does the same thing. Do these water pumps have a weep hole like some auto pumps do?

Going to pull the sensor from the block tomorrow to see if possible there is anything in the port that may be stopping the gauge from working. Ideas???

Oil pressure gauge? Got one on that 135? Is it working? If not, get a new gauge.

I have a 1964 MF-135 diesel deluxe with multipower. I wired a pressure switch and a big green LED idiot light (on the dashboard) so I get the green light ON when oil pressure is above 5 psi or so. That switch is the gizmo with the red and green wires in the photo. It's on a tee in the block. The other outlet of the tee goes to the oil pressure gauge.

I guess it depends on the type of water temp guage setup you have. Mine was the bulb type thermocoupler and a tube that runs to the guage. No wires are needed (except for the light portion which I havent hooked up). If yours is electric, or you are using the oem wire harness, you may have a bad wire, or a bad sending unit. You can always install an auto type temp guage setup, the wireless type like I have, they are pretty cheap, and easy to install. Dont recall if the water pump has a weep hole. Do you have overheating problems? Or are you just looking to monitor the tempature (which is good)?

What motor do you have? TB

Mainly looking to monitor the temp. No overheating issues...that I am aware of at least. I installed an auto temp gauge and still is not working. Planning on taking the sensor out of the block to make sure nothing is in the hole that may be stopping the gauge from picking up the temp.

Engine is the Perkins 3 cylinder diesel. It is a beast!!!! Tractor is in pretty good condition for its age. Tin is not the best, but not the worst either. Somedays I just get on and take a ride around the farm. She is fun!
