So as I was doing some snow clearing a couple days ago when I noticed a slight hesitation driving back uphill. I figured it was time to change the fuelfilter so I did.
Today I did some heavy snowblowing and near the end driving back up hill it REALLY bogged down up to the point where the engine would either stall, or drop so far in rpm that I had to use the clutch.
Added some more diesel to it but it kept doing this. The fuel tank is almost full.

I used the little lever on the fuelfilter to drain the fuel (prime it) and I didn't see any fuel run out of the overflow tube.
So I am wondering if there is gunk in the tank that is preventing normal fuel flow. This thing is a 1997 model and I am not the first owner.
Is there a fuel pump between the tank and the fuel filter ? I thought this is just gravity fed?
Should I drain the tank ? try to clean it out ? I see the fuel line connection at the bottom of the tank. There is also another bolt which I guess is to drain the tank.
Anything else I should check ?

Thanks all.

I'm new to diesel, but here's where I'd start. Is it possible the fuel is gelling because of the cold ? I'd make sure it's treated for the temperature, and change the filter.

Well, I was wondering the same thing. It has been around freezing. I was under the impression that diesel sold in winter is ok for lower temperatures? I live in a mountain town. The diesel was purchased last week.
I will talk to the gas station owner to verify. Filter was changed a couple days ago.

Pour "something" in the tank.. just to see if it clears up..
Don't take the gas station's word on the type of fuel.. chances are they don't know..& will tell u what u wanna hear.
If its freezing, U NEED something in your tank besides fuel..{additive}
& after pouring it in, it needs to be mixed up.. don't expect miracles w/ it just sitting there..
& FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS on the bottle.. I've seen a lot of harm done to fuel systems by not following the directions..
Good luck..

It just doesn't make sense when driving at an incline it starts to bog down but when back on flat surface it runs pretty much normal. I'll try some winter additive. I called the gas station and they said it's winterized since October.

It would help a lot if you gave your location.

Update;
So I drained the fuel tank.
Initial drain I used the drain bolt in the fuel tank. I drained into a white bucket so I could see any dirt coming out. I noticed a little bit but not much. Then I disconnected the fuel line from the tank and refilled and drained from there. No dirt came out.
I also disconnected the fuel line from the fuel filter housing and used compressed air to blow into the line backwards while disconnected. Reconnected everything. Primed it and tractor started right up. Took it for a spin but while driving back up the incline it does the same thing, bogs down.
I think the fuel filter location is above the level of fuel in the fuel tank when I am on the incline. This somehow causes it to not get enough fuel. Is it possible the little electric fuel pump is going bad ? This pump sits directly after the fuel filter. Is this pump supposed to pull fuel from the fuel filter housing ? I know the fuel filter housing has a weird connection from the housing to the fuel line feeding the electric pump. It came out really easily There is no bolt to tighten it. It seems to be pressed into the fuel filter housing but it came lose. I pushed it back in but I wonder if there is a small leak there causing the electric pump to draw some air ? Perhaps get a new fuel filter housing and/or electric fuel pump.?

IDK which inj. pump u have?? The CAV DPA pump?? THAT pump only requires 1-3 psi feed to run..Basically, gravity fed.. all that pump is doing is PULLING fuel from the tank & PUSHING it to the inj. pump..
It sounds as if u have a supply problem..?? It starts right up & works all day until u have an incline.?? Supply Problem.
Its possible the electric pump is bad.?? & the cost is minimal. compared to the headaches it causes..{Mr Gasket 12s}
If your going to get an aftermarket supply pump, check the PSI rating & stay under 10.!!!

Thank you for the reply ! I was kind of concluding the same thing. As long as the fuel level in the tank is above the fuel filter and electric fuel pump level it seems to run fine. As soon as the level of fuel is below the fuel filter and electric fuel pump it seems to get issues.
So yes, my guess is also that the fuel pump is broken and that the natural feed of fuel is enough to keep it running on flat land. As soon as the tractor gets on uneven land and the fuel level is below the pumps, it isn't able to move enough fuel to the injection pump from the electric pump.
I ordered a 4 to 7 psi electric fuel pump. I can't find the original pumps anymore but hopefully this will work ok.
I do not know which injection pump I have. I doubt it needs very high pressure to work.

I can hear the electric pump work and it does vibrate a little. I guess that doesn't mean it's ok.
